Introduction:

At Save the Children we recognise that people are the key to our success. As leader of HR Operations Excellence within the UK, our organisation strategy will only be achieved by providing a joined-up UK centre of expertise in, employee relations & policyand the development and dissemination of total reward strategies. These initiatives will make a major contribution to the continuing development of the HR function.

The Head of HR Operations Excellence will be responsible for managing and leading the Operations Excellence team HR who will work in partnership with the HR Business Partners and the People and Organisational team as well as partnering with the business to achieve their objectives.

Job Purpose:

Specifically to provide a leadership focus for all UK Operations Excellence team members and generally, as a member of the HR Senior Leadership Team, build HR capacity within Save the Children.

Key accountabilities:

  • Ensure Save the Children in the UK is seen as a leader in people practices and general policy within the sector
  • Management and on going development of Operations Excellence team which include Employee Relations and Compensation & Benefits
  • Manage and advise onemployee relations activities, via small Employee Relations & Policy team, managing key/ risk issues and minimising organisational impact.
  • Manage the Operations Excellence budget
  • Manage the union relationship, manage the National Liaison Group meetings and conduct all annual and intervening negotiations and policy/information/ consultation processes.
  • Through Compensation and Benefits specialist team, oversee all UK reward and benefit activity and recommendations
  • Ensure that UKjob evaluation and grading scheme is effectively communicated and understood throughout the business. In addition, to manage an effective linkage of this with the performance management and performance-related pay programme.
  • Oversee all UK payroll input in timely and error-free system, and the relationship with Finance
  • In conjunction with the Comp & Benefits Manager liaise with outsourced UK pension provider. Act as expert on pension management including specialist personal input into Pensions Trustees, including the impact of pension issues on organisation’s finances, and advise necessary changes for future safety
  • Own the HRIS system, Ensuring that it is fit for purpose and linking to all other IT systems to drive efficiency and reduce waste, this to include the roll out of EE/ER Self Service
  • Be the contact person on child safeguarding issues
  • Through Heath and Safety resource, be accountable for all UK Heath and

Safety standards, their promotion and their application in practice across all

areas

  • Participate in other HR activities and/or committees ( i.e Technology Steering Group) as a senior member of the HR team within Save the Children

Internal: UK HR team, UK Management team, International HR team

External: Peers and senior staff in other UK comparative organisations; government, education, regulatory/statutory and professional institutions.

Person specification
Essential Criteria:
  • Significant senior management experience in a complex organisation that places getting the people dimension right as a key factor in achieving the organisation’s strategic objectives
  • Qualified HR skills or equivalent professional background having held substantial senior level responsibilities which needs to have included team management skills
  • Experience of successfully working with minimal supporting resources and of influencing modern HR outcomes without undue process or intervention
  • Self-evident inter-personal skills that cause senior managers to seek help and counsel in resolving people issues maturely with minimal disruption. Able to create “attractive” expertise
  • Ability to demonstrate original, UK relevant, HR skills and ideas. UK employment practices expert skills; evidence of being able to effectively manage risks while at same time avoiding excessive and time consuming process. High-level personal employee relations management skills to include significant union collective bargaining and employee internal communications experience
  • Ability to demonstrate leadership behaviours and broad vision that allows the post holder to be groundbreaking and world class in their role. Give expression and meaning to our global leadership behaviours.
  • Well-developed skills in modern good UK HR practice, including direct management responsibility for union & employee relations in a service environment. HR skills in the following areas; resourcing, compensation and benefits, employee relations and employee communications.
  • The resilience and personal circumstances to be able occasionally travel within the UK, sometimes at short notice, and occasionally internationally
  • A commitment to personal and professional development of self and others
  • Experience of managing large budgets, cost control and planning, and accurate annual forecasting of expenditures. Financially literate, methodological approach and sound commercial judgment.
