Background, Mission, & Job Purpose

Don Bosco Community Center (DBCC) is seeking to hire graduate students to implement an early childhood language and literacy program bilingual for Latino/Hispanic children, ages 3-5, and their immigrant families.

The mission of the Don Bosco Early Childhood Bilingual Program is to help Latino/Hispanic children and their immigrant families become active participants in language- and literacy-based activities during their time at the center and in their homes.

  1. The primary purpose of the Early Childhood Specialist in Language and Literacy is to develop and teach integrated language and literacy lesson plans, with socio-cultural considerations for Latino/Hispanic children. Lesson plans’ goals and objectives and student performance rubrics must meet NY Early Learning and Development Standards.
  2. The primary purpose of the Early Childhood Specialist in Dual Language Acquisition and Development is to work in collaboration with the other specialists and the family coordinator in creating opportunities to develop literacy-based activities for the classroom and at home. The lesson plans’ goals and objectives and student performance rubrics must meet the NY Early Learning and Development Standards, within the Dual Language Development Framework.
  3. The primary purpose of the Latino Family Literacy Coordinator is to work with parents in order create literacy awareness and provide access to literacy-based resources, while promoting literacy-based activities for both at home and in the community.

Dates: Summer, July 9th-August 3rd, Mondays-Fridays

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Early Childhood Language & Literacy Specialist (1) (Spanish proficiency required)
  1. Meet twice during the summer to meet the Don Bosco staff and early childhood specialists and to review the curriculum and standards of the program.
  2. Plan lessons and use materials in alignment to the NY Early Learning and Development Standards (ELDS)/Common Core Standards (CCS) - English Language Arts, taking into consideration the Latino/Hispanic culture of immigrant families
  3. Implement lessons by using most current research- and evidence-based instructional

approaches (

  1. Create rubrics using ELDS/CCS-ELA Strands: Receptive and Expressive Language use; Social interaction; Book Appreciation and Knowledge; Knowledge of Print and its Uses; Phonological Awareness; Conveying Meaning through Drawing, Letters, and Words

D. Collaborate with other specialists and coordinator in data collection

E. Monitor, evaluate/assess language and literacy performance

F. Report students’ progress and concerns to program director

  1. Early Childhood Dual Language Specialist (1) (Spanish required)

A. Attend two summer appointments to meet the Don Bosco staff and early childhood specialists and to review the curriculum and standards of the program.

B. Plan lessons and use materials in alignment with the Dual Language Development Framework (ELDS/CCS)

C. Implement lessons by using most current evidence-based instructional approaches for early childhood development and ELL guidelines from

D. Create rubrics A-C: Early learning experiences will support 3-to-5-year-old children to develop listening and speaking skills, as well as early literacy skills

E. Collaborate with other specialists and coordinator for data collection

F. Monitor, evaluate, and assess language and literacy performance

G. Report students’ progress and concerns to theprogram director

  1. Family Program Coordinator (1) (oral and written Spanish proficiency is required)
  1. Attend two summer appointments to meet the Don Bosco staff and other specialists and to review the curriculum and standards of the program.
  2. Plan and implement literacy-based activities based on an parent engagement scale from Harvard Family Program
  3. Select appropriate literacy resources and activities that are culturally and linguistically appropriate for engaging Latino children and their immigrant families
  4. Collaborate with early childhood specialists and students’ families in teaching families how to promote literacy at home
  5. Present weekend workshops to create literacy awareness and promote reading engagement while monitoring parents’ participation (e.g., checklist)
  6. Report to program director

Qualifications:

  • Education: M.A. or M.A.T. candidate with a minimum GPA of 3.0
  • Specialized knowledge in early childhood education, language and literacy, second/dual (Spanish and English) language acquisition and development, and Latino families
  • Skills: Spanish proficiency is required for Positions B and C
  • Abilities: Consideration of Latino/Hispanic immigrant needs, socially and culturally
  • Professional Certification: in process or immediate completion
  • Experience: Practicum and/or internship related to these fields are a plus
  • Other: Passion for creating impact by helping an at-risk student population; detail oriented; assessment driven
