KEY RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT ACHIEVEMENTS

I am director of the Workforce Education and Development Group in the Faculty of Medicine at The University of Sydney. I have managed a number of substantial Health workforce educational research and development projects in Australia and internationally including: Development of Turning Point - a program to reduce adverse events for Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Massachusetts general Hospital; the development of the Australian National Patient Safety Education Framework for the Commonwealth; Basic Surgical training online for the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons; the development of the Cancer Learning Knowledge portal for the Cancer Australia; the development of the ISQUA Knowledge Portal for the International Society for Quality in Healthcare; the development of opioid treatment and accreditation for NSW Health; and the use of new technologies to improve event reporting amongst junior doctors at Brigham and Mass General Hospitals in Boston. I was a contributor to the WHO Patient Safety Curriculum Framework for Medical Schools and the Patient Safety Education Project (PSEP) in the United States.

I was a visiting Professor at Harvard Medical School for 12 months in 2008/9 during which time he developed new methodologies for the dissemination of evidence based medicine through online learning. I have also acted as an advisor and consultant to the Institute for Healthcare Improvement Open School Project, Partners Harvard Medical International and the Joint Commission in the United States. My research focuses on knowledge dissemination and transfer and flexible learning. I am currently an invited member of the Harvard Macy Faculty and teach innovations in health education and implementation at Harvard Medical School.

I sit on a number of significant national and international committees including: Academic Oversight Committee of the Institute for Healthcare Improvement Open School; International Medical Graduates Competent Authority Accreditation Committee for the Australian Medical Council; Expert Advisory Committee into Patient Safety Education in Medical Schools for the World Health Organisation; and the Hospital Skills Program State Training Council for the Institute for Medical Education and Training.

I chair the Implementation Science Working Party in the Sydney Catalyst Transitional Cancer Research Centre and am Associate Researcher responsible for leading implementation science projects at the Sydney West Translational Cancer Research Centre.

My key research achievements over last 5 years include leading a number of large randomized trials investigating the impact of targeted education on practice amongst primary care physicians across the USA and across Resident Doctors at Massachusetts General and Brigham and Women’s Hospitals. These studies demonstrated that significant practice change could be achieved through online education and resulted in publication in the British Medical Journal Safety and Quality and award for research publication of the year in the Journal of Continuing Professional Development in the Health Professions (2012).

This work has led to a significant number of ongoing translational research projects both in Australia and the United States investigating issues such as pain management, referral for genetic counseling, management of breast cancer and diagnosis in lung cancer.

I am currently a Chief Investigator on over 10 research grants totaling over $1.4M. This is in addition to my lead role on the Catalyst Translational Research Centre Grant and Sydney West Translational Research Grant (both $1.3M over 5 years). I lead the Catalyst Flagship project in lung cancer that is investigating and closing gaps in care in lung cancer across NSW.
