PROGRAM(S) ASSESSED Graduate Studies in Music
ASSESSMENT COORDINATOR Dr. Hank Dahlman
YEAR 4 of a 10 YEAR CYCLE
1. ASSESSMENT MEASURES EMPLOYED
This year, the Graduate Studies in Music program, a unit of the Department of Music, assessed Learning Outcome 3:
“The student will develop music performance skills as appropriate to the degree.”
This was measured using means described in our assessment plan as follows:
“Final and other examinations and tests, clinical observation, and performance in solo and/or ensemble settings, including concerts and recitals.”
The measurements were done in conjunction with the Department of Music’s undergraduate program.
a) in 2007-08 the Department of Music reviewed the performance standards in applied music. As applied music performance is fundamental to all music majors it is essential to assess this area on a regular basis. Assessment measures include performance juries at the end of the quarter, and performance at public recitals.
b) in 2007-08 the Department of Music assessed performance standards for music ensembles. Similar to standards for applied music, ensemble performance needs regular review. Assessment measures include public performances, and ensemble acceptance to perform at state and national conventions.
2. ASSESSMENT FINDINGS
a) Based on jury results, and recital performances applied music continues to be a strength of the Department of Music
b) Several ensembles were selected for 2007-08 and 2008-09 convention performances. Ensembles included representation in instrumental and choral areas. Quality of most campus ensemble performances was at a high level.
Concern was raised over the quality of the Pep Band and the Jazz Ensemble.
3. PROGRAM IMPROVEMENTS
a) None needed
b) The Director of the Pep Band and Jazz Ensemble met with Dr. Dregalla to discuss the issues and work on ways to improve quality of these ensembles
4. ASSESSMENT PLAN COMPLIANCE
a) in compliance
5. NEW ASSESSMENT DEVELOPMENTS
Although performance quality is assessed continually, it is important to hold formal evaluations of these important areas. Assessment for these areas was done by faculty involved, but also by the Department Chair, external judges hired to adjudicate various internal competitions, and the committees who adjudicate the various conference/conventions to which ensembles apply.
