UNIT TITLE / Handle solid plastering materials
APPLICATION / This unit specifies the skills and knowledge required to handle, sort, stack and store solid plastering materials for installation and removal.
It applies to those handling solid plastering materials in the construction industry. It includes planning and preparing for work, handling solid plastering materials and components, and following workplace health and safety and emergency procedures.
It supports those working alone and those working under supervision as a member of a team.
No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

1. / Prepare to handle solid plastering materials. / 1.1 / Identify scope of solid plastering task requirements and confirm with supervisor.

PERFORMANCE EVIDENCE
A person must demonstrate the ability tosafely handle solid plastering materialson three differentoccasions where at least occasion must be installation and another must be a removal.
In doing this, the person must:
  • comply withpolicies, procedures and requirements for workplace health and safety (WHS) and environmental protection
  • identify hazards and assess and control risks associated with handling plastering materials
  • identifyand report any faults in tools, equipment or materials to appropriate personnel
  • communicate and work effectively and safely with others
  • manually handle solid plastering materials and components

KNOWLEDGE EVIDENCE
A person demonstrating competency in this unit must have knowledge of:
  • policies, procedures and requirements for workplace health and safety (WHS) and environmental protectionapplicable to handling solid plastering materials and components,including clean-up management, stormwater protection and dust, noise, vibration and waste management
  • workplace requirements forhandling solid plastering materials and components, including:
  • interpreting scope of work requirements and reporting problems
  • identifying hazards and assessing risks and hazard, including the use of job safety analysis (JSA) andsafe work method statements
  • removing and disposing ofbanding straps, packing pieces, broken and damaged goods, cardboard, plastic, paper and excess plaster and render material
  • installing signage and barricades
  • safely storing plastering materials and components
  • dust suppression procedures including spraying with water, covering and using a vacuum cleaner
  • types, characteristics, uses, limitations and workplace requirements for safe use of plastering tools, equipment and components, including:
  • mortar boards and stands, shovels, sieves, straight edges and wheelbarrows
  • corner beads, casing beads, render and setting coats mix composition (including plasticisers, colour and waterproofing agents), timber and metal lathing, fasteners, sand, lime, lime putty, plaster compounds and finish coats
  • techniques for:
  • sorting and stacking solid plastering materials and components
  • protecting solid plastering materials and components, including isolation and separation, covering, tying and banding, barricades, signs and locking away
  • checking tools and equipment and workplace requirements for rectifying and reporting faults

ASSESSMENT CONDITIONS
Assessors must satisfy the requirements for assessors contained in the Standards for Registered Training Organisations.
Assessment of performance must be undertaken in the workplace or in a simulated workplace environment. Tasks are to be performed to the level of proficiency and within the time limits expected in a workplace.
Assessors are responsible for ensuring that candidates have access to current industry-standard:
  • documents, task instructions, tools, equipment
  • relevant legislation, regulatory standards and codes
