MEAT FROM SCRATCH

ARTIFICALLY MADE BEEF BURGER

Scientists have discovered a way to create a burger in a lab using stem cells. The burger is 100% safe to be eaten. They first extracted stem cells from the skeletal muscle of a cow then injected a chemical into the stem cells to develop them into muscle cells. They grew the muscle cells in a Petri dish and once enough muscle tissue were grown, the scientists grinded it into mince. The mince then went on to be pressed into the shape of a burger and grilled, until cooked. I would happily agree to eat a stem cell burger because it is safe and is made without killing animals.

WHAT STEM CELLS ARE

Stem cells are cells that have the potential to turn into any type of cell, so they have the chance to turn into a red blood cell (a cell that carries oxygen around your body,) or a nerve cell (sends impulses into your brain).

In these stem cells, there are two types, embryonic and adult stem cells.Adult stem cells, despite the name can be found in the body of children and adults. These adult stem cells cannot turn into any type of stem cells.

Embryonic stem cells can turn into any type of stem cell but ethical problems occur when taking embryonic stem cells as it comes from the blastocyst, something that has the potential to become a living human being even despite the fact that blastocyst can be helpful to cure skin by growing a new layer of skin for burn victims.

ETHICAL PROBLEMS

The use and experimenting on stem cells that come from the blastocyst has been debated on if it is morally right or not. People think that it should be allowed because it could help find cures and test new drugs that we need in order to survive. The blastocyst only has thePOTENTIAL to become a baby, doesn’t mean that it actually will become a living human being. Some people find it is wrong to test stem cells from the blastocyst because couples that cannot have babies can be donated these blastocyst in order to birth a child.

WOULD YOU EAT A LAB BURGER?

We asked some people on if they would eat a burger that is grown from a lab and these are their opinions. One person stated that they “can’t imagine that a burger made in a lab would ever taste good” Another said that they’re “not comfortable with the idea” while one person said that they “would be happy to eat a stem cell burger, as long as it is safe to eat.” What would you do if you got offered a chance to eat a lab burger?
