Background

The University of Manchester was launched on 1st October 2004, combining the strengths of the former Victoria University of Manchester and UMIST. This has established the largest non-federal university in the UK, with an income of £367m and a student population of more than 35,000. The University has a challenging agenda which will position it as one of the top 25 research intensive universities in the world by 2015. Linked to this objective are targets to more than double the volume of research activity it carries out with external partners.

School of Mathematics

The School of Mathematics is one of the largest integrated departments of mathematical sciences in the UK (~80 academic staff, 1100 UG and 185 PG (R & T) students) and covers the entire breadth of the subject, including pure and applied mathematics, probability and statistics. It has an international reputation for its research, with almost 60% of its activity rated internationally excellent (of which 20% was classified as world leading) in the Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) 2008.

In 2007 the School of Mathematics moved into the AlanTuringBuilding: a new bespoke £40M building, designed by mathematicians explicitly for research and UG/PG training in mathematics. Its central location places the School, both physically and academically, at the heart of the University. The new building is proving to be an excellent environment for research and teaching.

Further information on the School and its specific research interests can be found at

Actuarial Science at The University of Manchester

The School of Mathematics launched its BSc in Actuarial Science and Mathematics in September 2008 and has successfully recruited over 120 students to the programme to date.
