Art IV & Individual Study - Student and Family,

Welcome to Semester I of the St. Joseph Catholic School 2016-2017 academic year. It is a fresh start for all! As the high school visual arts instructor at this institution, I greatly look forward to sharing my knowledge and experience within the visual arts with passionately creative young minds this school year. I am a graduate of DeltaStateUniversity’s Art Education Program through which I earned full certification and licensure as an educator in the state of Mississippi. I am very proud to be in my eleventh academic year teaching at St. JosephCatholicSchool in Greenville and I expect to make this semester an exceptionally constructive learning experience for all.

In art class, we will be exploring fundamental basics of artistic composition, as well as several detailed processes involved in the creation of “art”. We will discuss and compose works in multiple art forms, and apply basic and advanced concepts within the visual arts. Art classes at St. JosephCatholicSchool are exciting, project-oriented journeys into the realms of visual creativity where artists are able to express, in many forms, their individual ideas, interests, and experiences.

Ending each quarter, students receive a quarterly average based on:

- Projects 70% of quarter grade

- Class & Homework Activities 20% of quarter grade

- Art Journal 10% of quarter grade

*ASSIGNMENT LATE FEE = 10-POINT DEDUCTION OF CREDIT PER DAY LATE ON ANY ASSIGNMENT

* I thank you for allowing me the opportunity to enhance your talents in creative expression as well as your understanding of visual art in general. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me in person at St. JosephSchool, via email: , or by phone: (662) 378-9711.

God bless,

Brian C. Speck

POLICY

Students enrolled in art classes at St. JosephCatholicSchool will be expected to understand and adhere to the rules and procedures set forth in the classroom in order to ensure that we all may benefit from the best utilization of our time and are able to achieve the highest quality of work that each student is capable of producing. In our endeavors to experience, produce, discuss, and critique meaningful visual artworks, it is of the utmost importance that each student exhibits maturity and compassion for the efforts and trials of others as well as his or herself. The visual arts center cannot and will not tolerate the following actions or behaviors which will be handled with appropriate consequences.

●Tardiness will result in tardy detentions (You’ve got to be prepared and on time for class each period to ensure the successful flow of the day’s lesson and ensure all materials from the lesson have been acquired)

Violating uniform policy will result in demerits for repeat offenses (You’ve got to begin dressing for success now as many of the career opportunities that will be offered in life, demand this)

Verbal / Physical threats will result demerits or disciplinary referrals depending on severity (Such behavior would never be tolerated in the workforce and exhibits regression in maturity. We are preparing you for a successful future and it would be a disservice NOT to address such issues in the school setting)

Disrespect / Disregard for materials will result in loss of art center privileges, loss of access to art center materials, or disciplinary referral (We are ALL God’s blessed children, created in HIS own image which means that EACH AND EVERY one of us are entitled to our self esteem and dignity. It goes against the will of God to treat others or their belongings any other way than we wish to be treated or have our belongings handled)

Cheating or plagiarism will result in immediate loss of ALL assignment credit, as well as a disciplinary referral (You’ve got to be your own creative geniuses! How can you progress without effort?... cheating is just the opposite of effort… Don’t regress, PROGRESS!)
