Course Syllabus: AP Spanish Language

AP Spanish Language is intended for students who wish to develop proficiency and integrate their language skills. Students who enroll should already have a basic knowledge of the language and cultures of Spanish-speaking peoples and should have attained a reasonable proficiency in using the language. It is assumed that students in this class have a reasonable proficiency and are at the end of their secondary school training. This course is designed for students to take the College Board’s Advanced Placement exam in Spanish Language for possible college credit.
This course is the equivalent to a third year university course. It will help prepare students to demonstrate their level of Spanish proficiency through speaking, reading, writing, and listening. Students taking this course, emphasizing the use of Spanish for communication, have the following objectives:
1. the ability to comprehend formal and informal Spanish;
2. the acquisition of vocabulary and a grasp of language structure to allow the easy and accurate reading of periodicals and modern literature in Spanish;
3. the ability to compose expository passages,
4. the ability to express ideas orally with accuracy and fluency.
AP Exams
This class will prepare you for the AP Examination for Spanish Language, which you will be expected to take. The final in this class will be a released AP Exam and you will be graded according to the AP scale.
Materials:
Students are expected to bring the following to class every day:
1. A small 3 ring binder
2. Writing instrument (2 pen and pencil)
3. colored pen other than blue or black ink
4. highlighter
Students will be expected to speak only Spanish in class. English is not allowed in the classroom. Speaking English will seriously hinder your education in this class. It is not fair to other students as it hinders their education as well.
Grades
Grades will be based on points which will be earned from grammar tests, vocabulary and reading quizzes, vocabulary and grammar homework, written and spoken journals, class work, and projects. Late work is accepted for 1 week after the due date and it is only worth 50% of the original value. Grading is weighted as follows:
· Vocab Quizzes – 15%
· Grammar Quizzes – 20%
· Speaking Activities – 5%
· Listening Activities – 5%
· Reading Activities – 10%
· Writing Activities – 10%
· Homework – 25%
· Final Exam -10%

Remember that this will be a hard class that requires a lot of work in order to succeed. You must be willing to spend an hour per day, everyday. I will ask a lot of you because you are capable of very high achievement. If you dedicate yourself to doing the work that this class requires, you will get a lot out of this course.
TLDR – You will become fluent in Spanish. No freaking out about anything. Ever. Show up. Come prepared. Be respectful. Have fun. Do your best!
