April 27, 2007 FEMA Emergency Management Higher Education Project Report

(1) BALLSTATEUNIVERSITY -- PROPOSED MINOR AND MAJOR IN ENVIRONMENTALHAZARDS:

Talked today with Professor Thad Godish who notes that proposals to develop a minor and a major in Environmental Hazards seem to going well and he is hopeful that at least one of these programs will be in-place this time next year. There is also some work going on concerning the development of a Graduate Environmental Hazards Concentration.

(2) INDIANAUNIVERSITY-PURDUEUNIVERSITY FORT WAYNE -- RISK AND EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT CERTIFICATE:

Discovered today that IPFW has sometime back instituted a seven-course, 21-credit hour undergraduate "Risk and Emergency Management" Certificate Program. The point of contact is Dr. Barry Hancock, Director and Assistant Dean of Public and Environmental Affairs. We will soon be placing a description of this program in the "Stand Alone Certificate"section of the Emergency Management segment of The College List on the EM HiEd Project homepage. (3) IVY TECH COMMUNITY COLLEGE, INDIANA -- INVESTIGATING EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT CERTIFICATE:

Talked today with Kyle Cline in the Workforce and Economic Development Office at Ivy Tech who notes an investigation that has started there into the development of an Emergency Management Certificate Program. Had questions about curriculum design. Recommended attending the EM HiEd Conference and he is going to try to make that happen. Talked briefly about the range of material on the website.

(4) UNIONCOLLEGE, LINCOLN NB -- INTERNATIONAL RESCUE AND RELIEF

PROGRAM:

Was called today by Jeff Joiner, Chair, Division of Health Sciences at UnionCollege to note that for several years UnionCollege has been offering an International Rescue and Relief program. This is a Bachelor of Science Degree is based out of the Health Sciences Division. Mr.Joiner noted that he had just found out about the EM HiEd Project and the upcoming conference (which he wants to attend and I approved). I asked him to draft a description of this program for upload to the International Disaster Relief and Humanitarian Assistance section of The College List on the EM HiEd Project homepage.
