·  The review of the nursing PhD program will start on Monday.

Announcements/plans/issues UMBC

·  UMBC just completed the Middle States process. All standards were met completely and there were no recommendations.

·  Robert Deluty is retiring and this will be his last Grad Council meeting. The new associate director, Jeff Halverson, was introduced. Dr. Halverson will start in January.

GSA Reports

UMB (Erin Golembewski)

·  The GSA is in the process of planning for the February 2017 admissions candidacy ceremony. The GRC is scheduled for March 13, 2017.

UMBC (Janet Rutledge)

·  The GSA is in the process of restructuring the GRC. Most departments host their own research day and because of this, the GRC is viewed as redundant. The new focus will be on improving the methods used for presenting research and interdisciplinary topics. A workshop on Tuesday, December 6 with Scott Morgan will offer coaching on 3-minute thesis. In January and February, one-on-one coaching will be available. In addition, “stoop stories” workshops will take place in January. The focus is, “How to tell a story about your research.” These workshops are open to all USM students.

Program Review

·  Modern Languages Linguistics and Intercultural Communication

o  The Program Review Committee found that the recommendations made during the review were met with appropriate actions. In response to the committee’s concern about the decrease in enrollment, Dr. Rutledge advised that the decline was due in part to the decline in domestic teachers.

The committee recommends approval of the review. A motion was made to accept the committee’s recommendation. The motion was properly seconded and carried unanimously.

Background Information and Discussion Options for Listing Outcomes of Audit Courses on Transcripts

·  This discussion was prompted because of a request from an employer who requested a statement verifying the employee’s attendance. Currently, transcripts do not show the degree of effort that the student put into the course. Research revealed that proportionately, more graduate courses are audited. Towson has a grading system of AUX (failed to attend) or AU (attended) and North Carolina uses NR (no recommendation if the student did not show up. Feedback is being sought to determine if this is something we should pursue further. After some discussion, it was agreed that the system we have in place is sufficient. However, language in the graduate catalog needs to be updated to add more information.
