About BTEG 2016

The Black Training and Enterprise Group (BTEG) is a national charity delivering programmes for young black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME) people aged 11-30 years. We conduct action research and provide a voice to government for BAME organisations.

Our trustees, staff and patrons are committed to providing effective leadership and innovative solutions to long standing racial inequalities. We believe our country will be more equal, inclusive and fairer when all organisations, across all sectors reflect from top to bottom the diverse service users and customers that they depend on. Racial inequalities waste the talents of many young BAME people and we must do all that we can to remove barriers that hamper these young people from reaching their full potential.

BTEG started out as a project within National Council for Voluntary Organisations in 1991 and registered as acharity in 1996. BTEG is a networking organisation supporting over 1200 voluntary groups and community businesses in England.BTEG now provides programmes for young people, national policy development and action research. The organisation continues to collaborate with other equality and mainstream organisations and hasnow established itself as an important voice on young BAME people and the criminal justice system (CJS).

BTEG Mission

BTEG’s mission is to end racial inequality. We believe that the contribution of all communities makes a nation, builds dynamic local communities, generates wealth and improves well-being. We champion fairness, challenge discrimination and pioneer innovative solutions to empower BAME communities through education, employment and enterprise. Our activities involve working with Government, business, public services, BAME organisations and the media.

Aims and activities of the organisation

BTEG has five core aims:

  1. Employment: to increase employment rates for BAME people to the national average.
  2. Social and Economic Regeneration: to ensure that BAME communities contribute to the social and economic regeneration of their communities.
  3. Education: to raise the attainment levels of BAME pupils in education to the national average.
  4. Strong Communities: to work with individuals and communities to improve integration and cohesion through developing shared values and aspirations for the whole community.
  5. Entrepreneurship: to motivate and inspire individuals to act on their ideas and to realise their enterprise potential.

Our main strands of work include:

Policy and action research: we advise government departments, produce research reports, key statistics, briefings and e-newsletters and stimulate new approaches to close the racial inequalities that persist in education, employment and enterprise. Regular events are held to connect our networks with policy makers and to inform our policy development. We campaign at national and London level to keep BAME unemployment and social mobility on the agendas of Government and Mayor of London.

Advising government: BTEG continues to advise the following bodies: Department for Education’s Apprenticeship Equalities and Diversity Advisory Group (chaired by BTEG);Metropolitan Police’s Strategic Inclusion, Diversity and Equality Board. BTEG is also a member of the Reducing Reoffending Third Sector Advisory Group (RR3) which advises the Ministry of Justice officials and is supported by Clinks, the infrastructure organisation for VCS in the CJS.

Innovative projects and partnerships

Routes2Success: A London community role model programme that uses a volunteer force of successful men and women from African, Caribbean, Asian, Arabic and mixed backgrounds to inspire young black males and ethnic minority girls and young women 11-25 years to succeed in education, employment and enterprise.

Work placements4 ME: A new project to enable young BAME people (aged 18-30) to gain experience within a working environment that’s in line with their career aspiration. It also supports and strengthens established BAME voluntary and communityorganisations in London to be better placed to take on volunteers and to maximise this resource.

Criminal justice system and young people: A national initiative to improve outcomes for young BAME people in the criminal justice system. The project works closely with Baroness Lola Young who chair’s an Independent Advisory Group.

Moving On Up: An initiative aimed at increasing the employment rates of young black men in London, aged 16-24, over the next two years (2015-17) by funding projects that will help job ready young black men into work and by supporting the London Advisory Group for Moving on Up.

Strategic Partner for Joseph Rowntree Foundation (JRF): JRF has commissioned BTEG to manage their new poverty and ethnicity demonstration projects programme. We will support four demonstration projects to capture learning that can be used by JRF and others to influence local and nation policy to tackle poverty.

Ready4Work: A new pilot initiative that will be delivered in Islington and Haringey in 2016/17. Itwill provideyoung people 18-30 with the skills, experience and mind set they will need to move into employment. The programme sees a value in allowing young people to demonstrate entrepreneurial skills without being a programme solely about enterprise.

PROJECT SUMMARY

ROUTES2SUCCESS ETHNIC MINORITY ROLE MODEL PROGRAMME

Our aim is to inspire young BAME females and young black males aged 11-25 to raise their aspirations and to reach their full potential in learning, employment and entrepreneurship.

Routes2Success (R2S) is a London based programme set up to connect over 1000 young people with a volunteer force of successful BAME female and black male role models to raise aspirations and encourage participants to follow the best routes to learning and career success. The objective is simple: to help improve education and employment outcomes.

We give voice to young people through events, emails, on-line surveys and the R2S website forum. The data gathered through the programme will be used to produce policy papers to lobby government and to support local community groups to improve interventions for young BAME peopleby using their views and what works for them.

Routes2Success is managed by Indra Pooran and supported by a volunteer project support officer and Jeremy Crook OBE, BTEG’s Chief Executive.

Programme outcomes

Outcome 1 / Young people at risk of becoming NEET continue in school or college
Outcome 2 / Young people have career ambitions not constrained by ethnicity or gender
Outcome 3 / Young people have a better understanding of skills/qualifications employers are looking for

The programme is funded by the John Lyons Charityand engages with a range of stakeholders including young black males, young BAME females, parents, role models, schools, pupil referral units, youth offending institutions and local community organisations.

ROLE SUMMARY

The aim of the project is to inspire young BAME femalesand young black males of African, Caribbean or Mixed origin and aged 11-25 years to raise their aspirations to reach their full potential in learning, employment and entrepreneurship through the Routes2Success Ethnic Minority Role Model Programme.

The programme uses volunteer BAME femaleand black male role models to inspire young BAME femalesand young black males to contribute to community life by establishing local youth initiatives. We especially want to attract successful BAME females and black entrepreneurs to act as volunteers to help young people to be more entrepreneurial in their lives and think seriously about entrepreneurship. We also want to attract those working in sectors or fields which are usually perceived to be constrained by gender and/or ethnicity such as IT and engineering

To develop and deliver inspirational talks and workshops for 1000young BAME females and young black males over 1-3 years.

The main outcomes of the programme are that the role models will:

  • Inspire through life experiences and experiential opportunities;
  • Communicate by providing opportunities for pathway challenges and opportunities;
  • Share best practice and offer tips and access opportunities for success.

Young people will be reached through:

  • Schools and colleges
  • Youth organisations
  • Other professional agencies working with young BAME people

Role model meetings and workshops with young people will be arranged with consideration given to your timetable by the R2S Programme Team.

TASKS

  1. To attend BTEG R2S Role Model Training and Induction Programme
  2. Commitment to 12 days volunteering per year. Some events will take place at weekends and evenings.
  3. Contribute to R2S career fact sheets for young BAME females and young black males.
  4. Produce at least two blogs to be uploaded on own area of expertise and experience (i.e. tips and inspirational example of good practice)
  5. Adhere to the values of the programme at all times.

We want role models to reflect a cross section of occupations and experiences. An ability to engage with young people and strong commitment to the process of inspiring the next generation is important.

It is our expectation that role models will be:

  • Successful entrepreneurs.
  • Senior managers in the private, public and voluntary sectors.
  • Qualified professionals, particularly in fields that are sometimes perceived as constrained by ethnicity and/or gender.
