Role Description: Community Based First Aid Intern
About the British Red Cross
The British Red Cross is a volunteer-led humanitarian organisation that helps people in crisis, whoever and wherever they are. We enable vulnerable people at home and overseas to prepare for and respond to emergencies in their own communities. And when the crisis is over, we help people recover and move on with their lives.
About our internship scheme
Interns at the British Red Cross are highly valued for the skills and energy they bring to our work. We hope to provide our interns with an insight into the daily internal workings of the world’s largest humanitarian organisation. The successful candidate will have access to relevant in-house training and development opportunities during the course of their placement. There also may be ad hoc opportunities to get involved in other areas of work where appropriate.
Your role as an intern will help make a great contribution to the work of the British Red Cross. You will get involved in a specific project for a set length of time within one of the various departments across the UK. As you are hired to support or complete a particular piece of work, you will have a real responsibility and place in the department, bringing some of your skills and experience to the role; you will also have the chance to develop workplace skills.
About Community Based First Aid
Our community based first aid training programme is designed to work with groups or individuals who may require a more flexible approach to learning first aid skills. For example, someone with mobility impairment may not be able to use their hands to deliver chest compressions to a casualty who is not breathing. Our trainers will consider the basic requirement of this skill – to apply pressure in the middle of the casualty’s chest – and work with a person’s ability to teach a suitable alternative, such as delivering compressions with an elbow or the heel of the foot.
We will work with an organisation to build courses around the specific needs and abilities of their clients, ensuring that essential first aid skills can be learned and that training is an enjoyable experience. The trainer will also ensure that the student has a good understanding of the skill so that they could instruct a passer-by in what to do in an emergency.
About this role
The main focus of this internship will be contacting and establishing links with local councils, housing associations, NHS Trusts and other local/regional bodies.
With each organisation the aim will be to build relationships with those responsible for their community engagement focus (or equivalent terms) and understand their aims and objectives with regards to their work with the communities which they serve.
As there will be cross over with the rest of the Humanitarian Action Team (HAT), the intern would be given background information on the key organisations we work with in ITMS, Refugee Services and Youth, learn from our ITMS needs assessment, and have a good solid knowledge of what we do in all the HAT services. This will enable them to talk with a sound knowledge base to potential partners about all our work.
The main outcome of this internship will be to inform our work over the next two years. We want to develop our understanding of the work being carried out by other organisations; thereby identifyingpotential partners as well asbuilding on existing partnerships, working toidentify areas of need and possiblefunding opportunities.
The role is subject to an Enhanced Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) check, as the role involves working with vulnerable adults and young people.
