AP Statistics Summer Assignment

Welcome to AP Statistics! You have made an excellent choice in this course selection. You will find that the study of AP Statistics is not only interesting but that its usefulness will carry over into many areas other than mathematics.

It is a requirement of this course that you take the AP Statistics exam. In order to help prepare you for this test, we have decided to give a summer assignment. Our intent is to help get you started in your study of AP Statistics, and to allow ample time to learn all of the necessary concepts prior to the AP exam.

Another requirement of the course is that you have a Texas Instruments graphing calculator available for use at all times, both in the classroom and at home. We recommend that you purchase a TI-83+, a TI-84, or a TI-84+ calculator. Basic, silver and/or platinum editions of any of these three calculators are acceptable. We will have calculators available for you to rent from the school, however it is preferable that you purchase your own, as the calculators that we have available (TI-83) do not offer as many amenities as those listed above.

The AP Statistics textbook, Workshop Statistics: Discovery with Data and the Graphing Calculatorwill be available during your orientation in August when you pick up your class schedule. The new edition of this ext is ahardcover version. In previous years you were able to purchase a soft cover version; that is not the case now. All of your work must be completed on separate paper or in your notebooks or in your notebooks.

In order to be prepared for the first day of AP Statistics class this fall you must do the following:

  • Download Topics 1 and 3 from the older edition of the text book which are provided on Ms. Smith’s webpage and complete the summer assignment.
  • Ensure that you have either a TI-83+, TI-84, or TI-84+ graphing calculator available for the first day of class this fall. If you choose, you may rent a TI-83 calculator from the school in the beginning of the fall semester.
  • Complete the summer assignments before the first day of class in September.

Thank you for choosing AP Statistics! We look forward to seeing you this fall. Have a great summer!

Sincerely,

Ms. Yvonne Smith

Mr. Robert Albritton
