Era II: Classical Civilizations and the Rise of Religious Traditions, 1000 b.c. (b.c.e.) to 500 a.d. (c.e.)

By the end of this unit, students will demonstrate knowledge of the civilizations of Persia, India, and China in terms of chronology, geography, social structures, government, economy, religion, and contributions to later civilizations by:

1. Describing Persia, including Zoroastrianism and the development of an imperial bureaucracy.

2. Describing India, with emphasis on the Aryan migrations and the caste system.

3. Describing the origins, beliefs, traditions, customs, and spread of Hinduism.

4. Describing the origins, beliefs, traditions, customs, and spread of Buddhism.

5. Describing China, with emphasis on the development of an empire and the construction of the Great Wall.

6. Describing the impact of Confucianism, Taoism, and Buddhism.

Objectives:

We will be able to show our knowledge of the topics we have discussed thus far relating to the Early River Valley Civilizations.

Closing Task:

I will write TWO direct comparison statements which compare and contrast any of the three Chinese philosophies that we discussed in class today.

Part I – Chapters 3, 4, and 7 Exam – Multiple Choice (35 minutes) Individual

Take the Chapters 3, 4, and 7 Exam, choosing the best answer for each question. You MUST write your answer BOTH on your exam AND on the scantron. If you have any questions, please raise your hand and I will come to you to provide an answer.

Part II – Chapters 3, 4, and 7 Exam – Comparative Long Essay Question (LEQ) (45 minutes) Individual

You will write your answers to the question in the spaces provided. Note that I have broken down the essay components for you. Be sure to write in complete sentences and thoroughly answer all parts of the question. Write clearly and legibly – if I can’t read it, I can’t give you credit!
