ADVANCED PLACEMENT, CLEP, AND MILITARY SERVICE CREDIT

Board Policy 4235 authorizes the Board of Trustees to grant credit to any student who satisfactorily passes an authorized examination. Students may also receive credit for successful completion of Advanced Placement (AP) examinations; College Level Examination Program (CLEP) examinations; and, elective credit for basic training and approved coursework taken in the Armed Services of the United States by petitioning for credit with the Counseling Department.

A.  Advanced Placement Examinations: Section 55052 of Title 5 authorizes the District to grant credit for satisfactory completion of Advanced Placement Examinations as authorized by the College Entrance Examination Board. Faculty in the appropriate disciplines must approve:

1.  The advanced placement examination;

2.  Scores that constitute satisfactory performance;

3.  Courses offered by the college for which credit will be granted; and,

4.  Requirements that may be met by such examinations as approved by the District Curriculum Committee (Title 5, Section 55052).

Students who have successfully completed courses in the Advanced Placement Program and receive a score of 3, 4, or 5 on the Advanced Placement Examination may be granted credit for purposes of general education certification, graduation requirements, and/or advanced placement in the College’s District’s sequence courses.

If students earn a score of 3, 4, or 5 on an examination and have indicated that scores should be sent to the College District, they may petition with the Counseling Department to receive credit. will automatically receive credit. The student’s academic record shall be clearly annotated to reflect that credit was earned through an advanced placement examination (Title 5, Section 55052). The College District will confirm the credit granted. If students choose to change their general education goal, they should meet with a Counselor and resubmit a petition. not to receive credit for Advanced Placement exams, they should request to have the credit removed from their transcript by making this request in writing to the Dean, Student Services.

B.  College Level Examination Program (CLEP): The College District awards credit for the five General Examination sections of the College Level Examination Program (CLEP). Six units of elective credit may be awarded for each examination that a student completes with a score of: 500 or higher on the written text or 50 or higher on the computerized test.

The CLEP may also be used to fulfill certain Associate Degree general education requirements as listed in the College catalog. Only students who are enrolled and matriculated at the College of the Sequoias (COS) may receive CLEP credit on their COS transcript. Students who received the minimum score or higher may petition for credit by submitting the official CLEP Test result to the Admissions and Records Office.

C.  Military Service Credit: Four semester units of elective credit will be given toward graduation to any actively enrolled student submitting a DD214 that shows completion of basic training in the Armed Services of the United States and any discharge other than dishonorable. Credit is allowed in accordance with the recommendations by the American Council on Education (ACE). The number of units awarded are those recommended by the ACE in the Guide to the Evaluation of Education Experience in the Armed Services (Guide).

In addition, up to eleven semester units of elective credit may be granted in accordance with the recommendation by the ACE in the Guide to actively enrolled students submitting a military transcript for lower division associate/baccalaureate level courses taken at schools in the Armed Services of the United States.

Both the DD214 and military transcript should be submitted to the Office of Admissions and Records. Following evaluation, a maximum of fifteen semester units in electives may be earned through military service.
