Anniston Lions 5K Run for Sight McClellan, Anniston, AL

Rain Clouds Part Slightly to Allow George to “Do It” at Lions Run for Sight while Meyer Defends Title

The 15th Annual Anniston Lions Run for Sight was delayed one hour as torrential rains and thunderstorms flooded much of the McClellan area. Over 150 runners braved the delay and ran in the rain to complete this year’s race. George Kiplagat waded the 3.1 mile course to win this year’s race with an impressive 17:10. Christopher Clementsand Chris Edmondson had great runs with 18 minute 5K’s. On the women’s side, Starletlynn Meyer defended her 2012 women’s title edging her sister Mary Meyer by just 10 seconds. Flooding conditions and over seven inches of rain kept numbers down from last year’s 218 finishers. Over 215 runners registered for this year’s race. Rainy conditions kept students from the AlabamaSchool for the Blind and CampLewis from participating.Anniston Lions President, Cindy Garmon noted the event raised over $7800 for the club’s sight related mission.A jazz quartet from AnnistonHigh Schoolprovided after race entertainment. Two Alabama state 5K records were set : Nancy Grace set a state record for 74 year old women(30:13) and Wilburn Smallwood set a state record for 89 year old male (55:56).
