To Whom It May Concern:

This letter confirms that the American Legion Auxiliary, Department of Michigan, is a not-for-profit veterans’ support, advocacy, youth development, and patriotic community service organization that has operated in Michigan continuously since its establishment in 1921. Contributions may be tax deductible according to the Internal Revenue Code and Internal Revenue Service regulations.

American Legion Auxiliary, Department of Michigan, is duly registered with the Internal Revenue Service and is tax exempt under section 501(c)(19) of the Internal Revenue Code. Our federal tax Exemption Identification Number is:EIN 38-0297690, and we are exempt under the national organization’s Group Exemption Number which is GEN 0964.

Girls State is the largest program sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary. It provides an opportunity for superior high school women who have completed their junior year to experience the “nitty gritty” of state government processes – the chance to live outside the text book. This program not only instills in its attendees a sense of pride and loyalty in America, but also prepares these women for a career in politics, public service, and excellence along their career path. It is the chance to plunge head-first into democracy, develop sharp leadership skills and create the foundation for informed and responsible world leadership.

Michigan’s American Legion Auxiliary Girls State is currently accepting donations that will provide scholarship opportunities to those young women who are interested in attending our program. Here is how you can help change their life and put them on the road to success: Send your check made out to the American Legion Auxiliary, Department of Michigan, located at 212 N. Verlinden Avenue, Suite B, Lansing, MI 48915, and earmark it for one of the following purposes:

Dorothy Pearl Scholarship Fund. This fund was established by one of our Past Department Presidents, Dorothy Pearl, who founded Michigan’s Girls State program in 1941. Seventy-Five years later, we are still going strong! This scholarship fund sends one young women to our program each year from a different area of Michigan.

Delegate Sponsorship. The cost to sponsor one young women to Michigan’s Girls State program is $350.00. Many applicants in Michigan do not live in a community that has an American Legion Post, making it difficult to find a sponsor. You can designate your contribution so one or more applicants are given the opportunity to attend.

Girls State General Donation. Aside from the cost of room and board for each participant covered by their reservation fee, there is a need for funds that cover our operating costs. Those costs include: Classroom equipment rental, copy machine rental, paper and office supplies, accident and liability insurance, government staff salaries, room and board for volunteers, and costs associated with our day trip to Michigan’s Capitol building where our “Elected Officials” are inaugurated. Since this is Michigan ALA Girls State’s 75th Anniversary, we would like to produce some professional looking “signage” to post at our 2015 session site located on the campus of Michigan State University. Your company name and logo can be added as a “Proud Sponsor” to the signs we will display to promote those who sponsored us. You can designate your contribution as a general donation, or specify a cost you would like to help us with.

If for some reason you cannot process a donation to our Michigan American Legion Auxiliary Girls State program which is a 501c19, you can make a donation to the National ALA Foundation, which is a 501c3, and specify the donation be designated for the Department of Michigan Girls State program. They will accept either a monetary grant or an in-kind donation, and will work with us to handle the process of sub-granting the donation to our department. Please contact me if those arrangements need to be made.

Thanking you in advance for your support!

Sincerely,

Beryl Robbins
