The SGL Carbon Award

I. NAME

The Award shall be known as The SGL Carbon Award, as established by the Sigri Great Lakes Carbon Corporation and supported by the Sigri Great Lakes Carbon Corporation. It shall be administered and presented by the American Carbon Society.

II. PURPOSE

(A) To recognize the overall contributions and accomplishments of an individual, which have significantly influenced the progress of science and/or technology of carbon materials. (B) To commemorate George Skakel, Sr. and George Skakel, Jr., for their contributions to the establishment and growth of the petroleum coke and graphite industries.

III. NATURE OF AWARD

1. The sum of $5,000.

2. An appropriate plaque.

3 A contribution towards travel expenses to attend the Conference, and living and other expenses while at the Conference.

IV. ELIGIBILITY

All workers in the field of carbon solids will be considered as eligible to be nominated for the Award. There will be no restriction as to race, creed, color, nationality, age, or sex of nominees or recipients. Posthumous awards will be made only when knowledge of the awardee’s death is received after the announcement of the award committee’s decision. Nominations of known deceased persons will not be accepted.

V. FREQUENCY

It is anticipated that the Award shall be presented at each Conference on Carbon sponsored by the American Carbon Society.

VI. NOMINATION

A nomination committee, appointed by the Executive Committee of the American Carbon Society, is responsible for accepting and processing nominations.

VII. SELECTION

A selection committee, of at least three anonymous members, appointed by the Chairman of the Executive Committee of the American Carbon Society, is responsible for selecting the recipient of the Award.

VIII. PRESENTATION OF THE AWARD

The recipients will be invited to attend the American Carbon Conference and present a Memorial Lecture on a topic of his/her choosing. The Award will be made in conjunction with the Memorial Lecture. If the recipient cannot attend the Conference, he/she may— subject to the approval of the Selection Committee— select a proxy recipient to accept the Award and present the lecture in his/her behalf.
