In the U.S. it seems there’s a “day” for just about everyone: Mothers’ Day, Fathers’ Day, Grandparents’ Day. There’s even a day for groundhogs. Then there are the awareness months: Cancer Awareness Month, Diversity Awareness Month, Motorcycle Awareness Month.

But there’s one important group – arguably the most important in our country -- that isn’t recognized: Our kids. Unlike most other industrialized nations, the U.S. is one of the few nations that does not have a day set aside to honor its young people. In a country ranked first in wealth and productivity, we do not have an official day in which we recognize our most precious resource – our children.

The 2006 BGC Day for Kids Survey – conducted of more than 1,500 Boys & Girls Club members from across the nation – identified how adults and children define meaningful time.

  • The results revealed that most young people (78%) feel they do spend enough meaningful time with their parents.
  • BUT … The young people surveyed (39%) said they want their parents to work less and spend more outdoor time with them (43%).
  • While most (79%) say their parents have talked with them about Internet safety, most parents never or very rarely (67%) surf the Internet with their children or ask them who they are talking to online (55%).
  • Most young people are participating in physical activities and games with their parents several times a week (55.1%) and eating home-cooked dinners together regularly (77%).

Why was the name changed from “National KidsDay” to “Boys & Girls Clubs Day for Kids”?

Boys & Girls Clubs of America made a decision last year to create a new event focused on the importance of parents spending meaningful time with their children. The name of our event, “Boys & Girls Clubs Day for Kids,” includes our brand in the title and more effectively dovetails with our organization’s overall branding strategy.

National KidsDay was an excellent event, but the name did not strongly convey the Boys & Girls Clubs of America brand message. The “National KidsDay” name is owned by KidsPeace.
