ALL-CIF & ALL-CITY BASKETBALL SELECTION

GUIDELINES & RULES

1.It is the responsibility of the Section Advisory Committee League Representative or designee to conduct your League’s All-League meeting. All head coaches should have input on the selections. This should be completed in a timely manner and prior to the All-City meeting.

2.All leagues regardless of number of teams in the league are recommended to have the following:

  1. Player of the Year and/or Co-POY’s plus 7 - 10 FIRST TEAM (12 players max)
  2. League options for Second Team and Honorable Mention (7 – 10 players)
  3. No Most Outstanding Player, Most Improved Player, etc.

3.It is the head coach’s responsibility to attend the All-League meeting or designate an individual to speak on behalf of your athlete or athlete’s from your league.

4.It is the league rep’s responsibility to attend the All-City meeting or designate another head coach from your league to speak on behalf of your athlete AND all athletes from your league. Assistant coaches are not welcome to attend.

5.In order for an athlete to be considered for the honor of All-City, it is mandatory for your League to submit your All-League team(s). Athletes will not be considered for the All-CIF or All-City Divisional teams if their League’s All-League teams have not been submitted.There will be no exceptions. Please rank your nominees in order of preference.

6.In order to be considered for the All-CIF LA City Section team, players must be on their League’s 1st team AND on the All-City Divisional team. For the All-City Divisional teams, players must have been selected on to theirLeague’s1stor 2ndteam and not honorable mention.

7.Athletes must be academically eligible the entire season.

8.Athletes must participate in 50% of all games played. Players may be eligible for All-City even if they were deemed “SOP” (Sit-Out Period).

9.Selections are not necessarily based on the athlete’s team record but on individual caliber of play, whom they played against, and how they performed.

10.All-CIF and All-City Divisional honors are based upon the season as a whole; not just the playoffs.

11.All student-athletes will be considered for the All-City team regardless of grade level.

12.Each coach is recommended (not mandatory) to fill out the All-City nomination form at the close of the season. This will assist the committee in the decision-making.

  1. Number of games played (Season, League and Playoffs)
  2. Field Goal % (2pt FGM/FGA and 3pt FGM/FGA)
  3. Free-throw % (FTM/FTA)
  4. Point average for Overall games, League games & Playoffs
  5. Rebound average for Overall games, League games & Playoffs
  6. Assist average for Overall games, League games & Playoffs
  7. Steals average for Overall games, League games & Playoffs
  8. Athlete’s uniform number (for coaches not familiar with your player’s name)
  9. Season Awards (All-Tournament teams) & any other relevant information
  10. Space will be provided for coaches to nominate athletes for other teams

13.The All-City Divisional teams will be comprised of the TOP 10 Players from each division. Ties will not be broken. There will be a Division Player of the Year and Coach of the Year. The exception is the Open Division which will be comprised of the TOP 12 Players. The Player of the Year will not count against the total number of honorees.

14.The All-CIF LA City Section team will be comprised of the TOP 15Playersfrom the City Section regardless of playoff division. Ties will not be broken. There will be an overall City Section Player of the Year and City Section Coach of the Year.

15.Voting will be done as follows: Nominations will be first recorded on the white board. League MVPs will then be distinguished from other candidates. For All-City Divisional teams, players will be ranked 1 – 10 (Divisions 1 through 5) and 1 – 12 (Open Division) with 10 and 12 designated as the strongest, respectively. After accumulating the points, the All-City Divisional teams will be determined by the most points earned per player. For the All-CIF LA City Section team, players will be nominated and then ranked 1 – 15 with 15 designated as the strongest. Division POYs will be distinguished from the other candidates. After accumulating the points, the All-CIF LA City Section team will be determined by the most points earned per player. There will not be a first and second team; rather the BEST 15 players chosen.

16.Each league rep will have the opportunity to speak on behalf of every player nominated in his/her league. Providing stats and pertinent information will be beneficial.

17.Section sports coordinator reserves the right to make additions/deletions/corrections to any of the All-CIF and All-City Divisional teams after the All-City meeting.

18.Certificates will be available to download from the CIF LA City Section website at under “Coaches/All-City Templates.” The Section will not be printing nor providing any hard copies of the certificates.
