What is a Drug?

A drug is any substance that alters the function of cells and tissue.

Drugs are generally of three types: ways of attaining the drug

Over the counter-OTC

Prescription- controlled substances

Illegal/ illicit- controlled substances/ usually illegal to possess or consume.

There is a large difference between drug Misuse and Drug Abuse.

Drug misuse is usually an error/ mistake/ error in judgment

  • Drug abuse is usually intentional

Both can be very dangerous

Tolerance or a resistance can be caused by repeated use of the same drug.

Dependence can be physical or mental/ emotional

Physical- your body needs it to maintain normalcy

Psychological- mind thinks you need it to survive.

Alcohol

Alcohol for drinking is generally – ethanol – ethanol is made from some type of vegetation.

Most alcoholic beverages are made from some grain or fruit.

Wines are made from mostly citrus and sweet fruits such as apples, grapes and some berries.

Beers are usually made from grains and hops

Alcohol dissipates at a rate of .015 per hour

The rate of intoxication is .02 per average drink

The process of yeast producing alcohol from the sugars of vegetation is called fermentation.

This type of alcohol can be produced from almost any type of carbohydrate

Beers and Wines and Champagnes are usually from fermentation only.

Liquors are created from the process of distillation

Distillation is the process of making the alcohol more concentrated

by removing the water.

Categories of Drugs by Effect

Stimulants- speed up the CNS (central nervous system)

Depressants- slow down the CNS, pain killers etc.

Narcotics- i.e. heroin, poppy plant, methadone ,

Hallucinogen- Causes distortions and images that are non existent

Similar to a mirage (LSD)

Also called psychedelics- they alter the mental state of the person

Cannabis Sativa-Marijuana, weed, hemp

THC – tetra hydrocannabinol

Inhalants- things that are sniffed- gas, glue etc.

What are some examples of the above categories?
