Course Description: This course explores the historical developments of people, places, patterns of life, and change from 1865 to the present day. Using the Virginia Standards of Learning as its foundation, the course curriculum focuses on the role of social, economic, and technical advances, as well as the changing role of the United States on the world stage. Students will draw upon the historical inquiry skills of chronological thinking, historical comprehension, historical analysis and interpretation, inquiry-based research and historical issue-analysis and decision-making in the context of United States history.

Course Objectives/Expectations:

§  Identify and analyze various perspectives and interpretations of historic issues, events, problems or phenomenon.

§  Locate places and understand and use geographic information or relationships by reading, interpreting, and preparing maps and other geographic representations.

Required Text(s): American Journey, Modern Times – Glencoe.

Student Supplies: Pencils, loose leaf paper, flash drive.

Class Format:

Students will complete a warm-up activity at the beginning of class. After the warm-up activity, a review of the previous class material will be conducted. Homework will be reviewed. An overview, including the objectives and desired outcomes, and facilitated learning of a new topic/material will be provided. A follow-up/review activity will be conducted at the end of class to tie up loose ends and assess content understanding relating to the new material. A homework assignment may be assigned.

Classroom Rules and Regulations:

1.  Respect for self, peers, adults, and property in words and actions.

§  Keep your hands, feet, objects, rude words & comments to yourself.

§  Participate positively in class. Do not interrupt the teacher or your classmates.

2.  Be on time and prepared for class.

§  Once the late bell rings, I will not allow you to return to another classroom to retrieve items you have forgotten. This disrupts both classrooms. You will be allowed to leave class a couple of minutes early so that you will have time to get what you forgot and get to your next class on time.

§  You are expected to have your tablet with you everyday.

3.  When an adult makes a reasonable request, follow it.

4.  Stay focused on learning; No eating, drinking, chewing gum, grooming or using personal electronic devices.

§  Grooming means: no putting on make-up, spraying perfume, applying lotion or make-up, combing, brushing or braiding hair, etc.

§  You may have a water bottle with water, no flavored drinks.

§  If the tablets are out, your water bottle must be put away.

§  All electronic devices, including cell phones need to be off and put away.

5.  If there is a substitute in class, I expect you to treat them with respect. Remember, they are a visitor to our school, and you need to be on your absolute best behavior.

Assessment:

·  Homework assignments will be checked daily.

·  Students will be quizzed once a week on new material covered in class. This will be on Friday unless otherwise announced.

·  Tests will be announced one week in advance.

·  Projects will be assigned throughout the semester. Most projects will be in class projects that will involve little at home work.

Reading Assignments: Will be provided in class.

Grading: The point system will be used in this class. Points will be assigned to each assignment depending on the degree of difficulty, time spent on the activity and the length of the assignment. At the end of each nine weeks student’s grades will be calculated by: Total points earned
