Southeast Chapter Awards Announced

Birmingham, Ala., June 13, 2016 - Alabama Public Television’s award-winning production team brought home five new trophies from the Southeast Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences ceremonies on June 11. The Southeast Chapter represents television professionals from all disciplines of the industry from Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, South Carolina and Asheville, NC. APT was nominated for seven awards this year.

Jeremiah, the story of Vietnam War POW and U.S. Senator from Alabama Jeremiah Denton, received four Southeast Region Emmy Awards: Best Documentary – Historical, Audio Post-Production, Photographer - Program (Non-News), Writing – Program (Non-News). Jeremiah was written and produced by Alabama Public Television’s Mark Fastoso, who interviewed members of the Denton family and veterans who served time with Denton at the infamous Hanoi Hilton to create a richly textured story of Denton’s war service and years of imprisonment, as well as his family’s ordeal back home. Jeremiahwas recently broadcast nationwide on public television’s WORLD channel.

Another APT production, an electronic field trip from the seriesProject C: Lessons from the American Civil Rights Movement, won the Emmy in the category of “Interactivity.” The live event, hosted by Kwame Holman and featuring PBS reporter Gwen Ifill, explored links between social activism, democracy and the legislative process while the audience participated in realtime polls and interactive Q&A segments with program gueststhrough e-mail, Google, Twitter and Poll Everywhere. This is the third Southeast Region Emmy Award APT has received for its live, interactive field trips that have now served more than 500,000 students in Alabama and nearly 3 million in the United States. The electronic field trips, and producer Heather Daniels, have also received multiple awards for educational programming and education innovation from the National Educational Telecommunications Association (NETA).

BothJeremiah (2016)andProject C(2015)also won “Best in Broadcasting Awards” from the Alabama Broadcasters Association.Jeremiah won the award for Best Documentary and Project C won the award for Best Service Project.
