AHRC Research Centre for Law, Gender and Sexuality

The Centre

The AHRC Research Centre for Law, Gender and Sexuality (Centre LGS) was founded in June 2004 and is funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council for five years. Centre LGS involves a partnership between the University of Kent – the main physical base for the Centre – and the Universities of Keele and Westminster.

What do we do?

The focus of Centre LGS is to pioneer and facilitate work that analyses, investigates and deepens understanding of the relationship between Gender, Sexuality and Law from a critical, international and theoretically informed perspective.

The Centre aims to make a distinctive contribution to arts and humanities research by using philosophical, historical, doctrinal, literary and cultural methods to analyse legal issues relating to gender and sexuality. In particular the Centre explores how gender and sexuality intersects with other social relations, such as class, disability, ethnicity, and race.

The Centre has developed a programme of research which focuses on three clusters of projects chosen for their capacity to illuminate our primary questions from different perspectives, and to reflect the expertise of the Centre: Law, Healthcare and Bioethics; Cultural Studies; and Governance and Regulation.

Membership

Membership of Centre LGS is open to staff and postgraduate students based at the Universities of Kent, Keele or Westminster, whose work or research is broadly in a relevant area. Members are entitled to reductions in registration fees for Centre events, eligible for research support, and have access to a network of academics and professionals.
