Place of the position within the research project in the faculty:
The proposed research chair in Ecumenics: Pentecostalism and Neo-pentecostalism resides in the research subprogrammeEcumenic Perspectives on the Development of Society. The research subprogramme leader reports to the Director Research: Unit for Reformed Theology and the Development of the South African Society (ERT).
Responsibilities:
  • Primary responsibility: Provide visionary leadership through research (individually and as part of a team) so that the research subprogramme can serve the following three mission elements of the NWU:
  • Mission element 2: To develop, teach and empower through innovative teaching, learning and quality research well-rounded graduates who can think laterally and critically in their service to the country and its people.
  • Mission element 3: To develop and maintain relevant and focused research of a high quality that is in line with national priorities, and provide innovative solutions to challenges facing the scientific community, the country, the continent and the world.
  • Mission element 4: To implement our expertise in teaching and learning and research – commercial and community-oriented – to the benefit of the province, the country, the southern African region, the continent, and ultimately the world.
  • Develop an own management profile with a view to visionary and effective management of the research subprogramme.
  • Prepare, implement, assess (own assessment, as well as in collaboration with internal and external assessment processes) and report on a strategic plan for the research subprogramme within the research strategy of the University, campuses and faculties.
  • Utilise strategic initiatives to achieve this planning on the basis of a five-year planning of research and postgraduate study and enrolment and throughput figures.
  • Annually agree on a management-performance agreement with relevant subprogramme leaders, monitor and supervise compliance with this agreement on an ongoing basis in order to timeously take the necessary steps to address management shortcomings and deficiencies.
  • Supervise the postgraduate-qualification programme leaders to utilise, on the basis of a five-year enrolment plan for each qualification, the strategic initiatives required to realise this planning, including postgraduate student enrolments, requests and examination.
  • Provide subject guidance, innovation and initiation with regard to research programmes of the research unit and the creative development and assurance of effective research.
  • Manage the integration and participation of master’s degree and doctorate students in the research subprogramme.
  • Recruit and manage post-doctoral fellows and their integration with and participation in programmes in the research subprogramme.
  • Serve officially on various faculty and university committees.
  • Be involved in the planning of staff structures, creation of positions and appointment and evaluation of staff who are involved in the research subprogramme, with the necessary emphasis on capacity building and expansion of expertise.
  • In consultation with the relevant research subprogramme leader conclude an annual performance agreement with every academic staff member (in all categories) involved in the relevant research subprogramme, and continually monitor compliance with the agreement in order to be able to take the necessary steps timeously.
  • Create a positive working environment for staff (including effective administrative, financial and information management, as well as the creation of a caring community).
  • Facilitate the academic development of staff in the research subprogramme together with the relevant research subprogramme leader in consultation with the Director Research: ERT, the dean and the executive committee of the faculty (identification, planning and facilitation of the profiling and NRF rating of staff; assistance and advice with the preparation of documentation).
  • Implement the appropriate quality promotion and assurance systems and mechanisms in order to ensure a constant flow of high-quality research outputs.
  • Initiate and generate additional income, and organise and allocate resources (staff, money, equipment) within the limitations and policy of, and according to the faculty, campus and institutional plans, to achieve goals.
  • Promote internationalisation by means of the effective integration of researchers within the research subprogramme in international research projects.
  • Enhance the marketability and effective marketing of the research subprogramme, qualification programmes and staff within the faculties, the University and the community.
  • Coordinate and facilitate community involvement by means of the employment of expertise within the research subprogramme.
Minimum experience:
  • Involvement in and presentation of papers at appropriate national and international professional societies as requirement
  • Experience of church ministry as requirement
  • Ongoing involvement with church ministry in Africa as recommendation
  • Focused research of at least five years after obtaining a PhD
  • A NRF rating as recommendation

  • Expertise with regard to theological traditions with specific focus in the area of Ecumenics: Pentecostalism and Neo-Pentecostalism and/or the ability in this respect
