Advanced Language Arts Course Syllabus

Course Description – The emphasis in this course will encompass comprehension and expression of the written and spoken word. Students will improve skills that involve various forms of reading, writing, viewing, listening, speaking, and presenting. As a secondary goal, students will investigate digital citizenship and learn to use a variety of digital tools in order to create and present information.

Course Requirements/Procedures –The following will be expected of all students:

  • Maintain an organized, up-to-date notebook (checked for a grade once per quarter).
  • Utilize a daily planner to keep track of homework and due dates.
  • Read an assigned novel each quarter, and write a five paragraph literary response essay as part of the EQT each quarter.
  • Achieve the Accelerated Reader point goal collaboratively set by the teacher and student each quarter (will count as a grade).
  • Create projects each quarter on assigned topics and novels.

Course Calendar – Refer to the calendar below for a summary of the quarter. When assignments are made, students will be given specific due dates.

Grading System – Major grades such as exams, writing assignments, and projects count as 60% of the grade, homework counts 10%, and daily work such as quizzes and classwork counts 30%. All assignments count as a grade.

Absences/Make-up Work – Students are responsible for completing all assignments. When a student returns from an absence of any length, he can check the make-up work folder to identify and record missed assignments. Before leaving the class, students should obtain a due date from the teacher.

Evaluation and Homework– An average of at least one weekly exam or project will be given. Students are assigned homework on an as-needed basis, and they are required to write the assignment in their planner.

Planning and conference time – When school days are on a regular schedule, I am available to meet with parents between 8:00-8:40. Contact the office at 221-2200 to schedule a conference.

Remind Parent Notifications- Remind 101 is a parent and student notification program. This program allows me to send notifications of projects, tests, and due dates to all subscribers via text message or e-mail. In order to receive notifications, please “subscribe” to my class by texting the appropriate code below(no spaces) to 810-10.
