Administering the SRI

Teacher Directions

Prior to Testing:

·  Review the general format of the test (computerized with questions about short selections/excerpts that are read)

·  Stress the importance of the test as an indicator of one’s reading comprehension.

8th graders’ winter scores (along with their 7th grade scores) will be used (in part) to determine intervention needs for 9th grade.

·  Explain that they will not be able to do anything after the test so they should take their time.

·  Make sure that your students are aware of their current Lexile levels and of the proficient Lexile scores for their grade level. (See pink ELA data sheets)

o  6th: 800-1050

o  7th: 850-1100

o  8th: 900-1150

Please review with your students:

1.  Take your time.

2.  Read the passage carefully.

3.  Read all of the answer choices.

4.  Click an answer choice & re-read the fill-in-the-blank sentence before going to the next question.

5.  If your text goes on to another screen – Click on the yellow arrow on the bottom left of the screen to read all of the text before clicking on Next.

These tips & log in-in information will be available on SRI Cue Cards @ each computer in the lab.

On the Day of Testing:

Please take your classes to the computer lab on your designated day.

·  Students log on to the computers as they normally do.

·  Select SRI workgroup.

Logging On SRI:

Name: first initial, middle initial, last name (Ex: msfreel)

Password: 6-digit birthday (010195 for January 1, 19995)

·  Teachers should have all log-ins and passwords on the roster sheets that were distributed. (if you don’t have one, let Missy know.)

·  Students can pick up to 3 genres of books that they like to read. (This will help in identifying books of interest on the student’s Lexile level.)

Practice Tests:

It should not ask students to take a practice test before taking the “scored SRI”; however, if a student is prompted to take the practice test, he/she will have to get at least 2 or 3 of the practice questions correct before it will allow him to take the SRI test itself. So you may need to help some kids through the practice so that they can take the test on their own.

About the Test:

·  Measures a student’s reading comprehension by providing a Lexile level. The Lexile can be used to match students to texts. It is not a grade equivalent.

·  The test is untimed. Students may use the restroom, if necessary, and the test will not time out on them.

·  Test generally takes approximately 30-45 minutes.

·  At the end of testing, they can view their score, but DO NOT allow students to PRINT.

·  Scores should be recorded in the appropriate spot on the students’ pink ELA data sheets.

Leaving early/Saving a Test:

If a student has started the test and wants to save the work that he/she has done, he/she may exit the test by pushing the apple-Q keys. When prompted to save the test, the student should click yes. The student will be able to retrieve and to complete this test at a later date.

Finished Students:

Students who have completed the test should sit quietly, or if it’s arranged with Rhonda, the students can go down to the library for book selection.

When a large portion of your class has completed testing, please take them back to your classroom. If someone is available to supervise, you may be able to leave the rest of students in the lab to complete their testing without distractions. Remind remaining testers to take their time and that if they don’t finish, I can call them back to complete their tests.

Absentees:

Please list any absent students on a sheet of paper and drop it in my mailbox when you get a chance. I will print your class scores when I get all of your make-ups completed. Please record new SRI scores in your plan book and share them with students. Be sure all students have updated their SRI scores on their pink data sheets that are in their portfolios.

I hope that it goes smoothly for you! Drop me a line if you have any questions or concerns during testing.
