Your appointment at Utah State University officially begins August 1, 2019 and your appointment will continue through the <2019-2020 academic year. Renewal of your employment will occur annually during your pre-tenure period, assuming acceptable performance towards the expectations in your role statement and satisfactory progress towards promotion and tenure. Your role will be XX% Extension and XX% Service. Your role assignments, in the form of a role statement and annual work plan, will be reviewed annually with the Extension regional director. Please read the attached role statement very carefully and return the signed copy along with this letter of offer. A mandatory review for tenure and promotion will occur during the 2024-2025academic year.

<OPTIONAL> The offer of appointment as Extension Assistant Professor is extended to you on the condition that you complete all requirements for conferral of the required terminal degree prior to August 1, 2019. If you do not complete all requirements by this time, your appointment will be at the rank of Extension Instructor, with an initial salary of $xx,xxx for the academic year. If requirements for the terminal degree are not completed by the last day of spring semester 2020, your contract will not be renewed and your final day at USU will be May 8, 2020. If you complete the requirements for the terminal degree by the end of spring semester 2020, the initial appointment at the rank of Extension Instructor will be converted to the rank of Extension Assistant Professor at the beginning of the following academic year, and your salary will be adjusted at that time. Your probationary period for tenure will begin the academic year of your appointment as an Extension Assistant Professor.

For purposes of annual evaluation, your efforts and accomplishments will be assessed in the areas ofExtension and service to the university, profession, and community. Your primary area of emphasis will be Extension, and you will be expected to achieve and demonstrate excellence in that area.You will be expected to be effective in service. Regarding your assignment in Extension, you will need to establish a coherent, focused, and sustained program(s) in the area(s) of <PROGRAMS>, as well as scholarship appropriate for an Extension faculty member.

As we discussed, the Tenure Advisory Committee (TAC) is an important mechanism that provides an annual evaluation of a faculty member’s progress toward tenure and promotion. YourExtension Regional Director will appoint and convene a five-member TAC for you no later than <DATE>to begin the process. The TAC members are recruited from Extension faculty and from other colleagues in appropriate areas. The role and responsibility of the Tenure Advisory Committee is to provide an annual evaluation of your progress toward tenure and promotion.

During your initial year of appointment as a tenure-track faculty member at Utah State University, the Vice President has requested that you participate in the USU Tenure Academy. The Academy provides you with the background, knowledge and skills helpful in getting established at USU and on the right track for tenure. The Academy will meet once a month during the Fall semester and for a closing event in late Spring. Further details will be provided to you by the Office of the Executive Vice President and Provost during the summer of <2019OR the summer prior to you coming to Utah State>.
