Activity 5 A – physical and chemical changes
Procedure
Part 1
- Place 5 mL of a lead nitrate solution into a test tube and note its physical properties.
- Place 5 mL of a potassium iodide solution in a test tube and note its physical properties.
- Mix the two solutions in 1 of the test tubes the physical properties of the mixture
- Let the mixture stand for five minutes and note any changes.
- Rinse the test tubes and clean the station.
Part 2
- Place 5 mL of an acetic acid solution in a test tube and note the properties.
- Take a sample of sodium bicarbonate and note its properties.
- Add the sodium bicarbonate to the acetic acid and note the changes.
- Rinse the test tubes and clean the station
Part 3
- Take a sample of copper sulfate crystals and note its properties.
- Place the copper sulfate into a test tube containing 5 mL of water.
- Place a rubber stopper on the test tube and shake until the copper sulfate is dissolved.
- KEEP THIS TEST TUBE FOR PARTS 4 AND 5.
Part 4
- Place 15 drops of the copper sulfate solution into an evaporating dish.
- Place the dish on the metallic ring.
- slowly heat up the dish until all the water has evaporated.
- What is in the dish? Let the dish cool down before cleaning it
Part 5
- Take a sample of steel wool and note its properties
- place the sample of steel wool into the test tube containing copper sulfate solution.
- Let stand for 5 minutes and note the changes.
- Dispose of the liquid in the sink and the steel wool in the garbage can.
Part 6
- Place 5 mL of hydrochloric acid in a test tube and note its properties.
- Take a sample of calcium carbonate and note its properties
- Place the calcium carbonate into the hydrochloric acid test tube and note any changes.
- dispose of the mixture in the sink and rinse and clean station.
Part 7
- Place 5 mL of a barium chloride solution in a test tube and note its properties.
- Place 5 mL of a zinc sulfide solution in a test tube and note its properties.
- Mix the two solutions and note the properties. (let stand for 5 minutes)
- Rinse test tubes and clean station.
Part 8
- Place 5 mL of hydrochloric acid in a test tube and note its properties
- Take a sample of magnesium and note its properties.
- Place the magnesium in the hydrochloric acid and note the changes
- Rinse test tube and clean station
Part 9
- Place 5 mL of distilled water in 2 test tubes identified as 1 and 2.
- Take a sample of ammonium chloride and note its properties.
- Place the ammonium chloride into test tube 2. Put a stopper on the test tube and shake softly.
- Compare the two test tubes. Note the properties.
- Rinse the test tubes and clean station.
