Unit 5: Sports Coaching
Activity 14 –Sit back, watch, listenand LEARN!!!
We are closing in now on you getting the opportunity to run your own mini coaching session…..but before we do we have one more little task to carry out.
Last week we looked at a couple of case studies on Super-Coaches and Bad-Coaches but it would be a great experience for you to observe a coach (who is obviously going to be a Super-Coach) in action and watch how they deliver a session.
However, it’s important that you are not part of the session so that you can fully concentrate on how the coach is conducting it. Make relevant notes on the things we have already covered in this unit. What would make the experience even more beneficial would be to look at their plan for the session as well, examining both format and content in preparation for writing your own.
Make sure whoever you decide to watch whether it be PE teacher or a coach outside school that you have asked permission to sit in and observe and explained the purpose of watching them and what you hope to get out of it.
How you record your observations is really down to you, as long as you collect information on such areas as:
- How they carry out the roles associated with a coach
- How they carry out their coaching responsibilities
- Any health & safety considerations they demonstrate
- How and when they demonstrate the techniques and skills
they are coaching
- Do they use any contingency plans and if so how & why
- How they link the components of the session together
- How they deal with interruptions or if the participants are struggling to achieve
- How they review the session afterwards with the participants
SELECTED MEMBERS OF THE GROUP WILL BE ASKED TO FEEDBACK TO EVERYONE WHEN THE OBSERVATIONS ARE COMPLETE – SO MAKE YOUR GOOD & THOROUGH!
