CALL FOR APPLICATIONS – INCENTIVE GRANTS

The Canadian Association for the Advancement of Women and Sport and Physical Activity (CAAWS), with support from the Ontario Sport and Recreation Communities Fund, is offering incentive grants to Ontario-based organizations interested in addressing the psycho-social factors that impact women and girls’ participation in sport and physical activity through participation, leadership or capacity building projects.

CAAWS is a national non-profit organization dedicated to creating an equitable sport and physical activity system in which girls and women are actively engaged as participants and leaders. CAAWS provides a number of services, programs and resources to a variety of clients, including sport and physical activity organizations, teachers, coaches, health professionals and recreation leaders. Since 1981, CAAWS has worked in close co-operation with government and non-government organizations on activities and initiatives that advocate for positive change for girls and women in sport and physical activity communities. PROJECT BACKGROUND

"Actively Engaging Women and Girls across Ontario" is a provincial project designed to increase capacity within thecommunity sport and recreation sector to increase the participation and leadership of womenand girls. Building on CAAWS' publication "Actively Engaging Women and Girls: Addressing thePsycho-Social Factors" (a supplement to the Canadian Sport for Life foundation documents) the project involves a number of strategies to enhance policy, practice, program and service delivery in communities across the province. The development and delivery of 10 targeted initiatives will be supported over the next 2 years.

INFORMATIONAL WEBINAR – “Creating Inclusive Environments for Women and Girls”

CAAWS will host a free webinar on Wednesday January 22nd 12:30-1:30pm EST to highlight key content and policy and practice recommendations from the “Actively Engaging Women and Girls: Addressing the Psycho-Social Factors” publication, and to review the incentive grant opportunity. INCENTIVE GRANT GUIDELINES

Ten incentive grants of $1,000 are available over the next two years to organizations within Ontariocommitted to increasing participation and leadership of girls and women. Grants will be paid in two installments: $750 upon selection, and $250 upon completion of final project reporting. Projects and required reporting must be completed by March 31, 2015.

Areas of Focus

Funded projects must focus on increasing girls’ and women’s participation and leadership by addressing the psychosocial factors that limit their involvement. Three types of projects will be considered for funding:

  1. PARTICIPATION PROJECTS must be geared towards the following Long-Term Athlete Development (LTAD) stages: Active Start, Fundamentals, Learn to Train, or Active for Life.   1. LEADERSHIP PROJECTS must provide professional development opportunities and/or involve recruitment strategies to engage more women as decision-makers, coaches, officials, etc., taking the psycho-social factors that impact their participation into consideration.
  1. CAPACITY BUILDING PROJECTS must provide educational opportunities to increase community program leader, coach and/or decision-maker awareness about the psycho-social factors that influence women’s and girls’ participation and leadership. Capacity building projects must contribute to increasing the quality of program, services and support for women and girls.

Possible projects include:

●Development of a new program targeting inactive girls and young women.

●Development of a new leadership development program targeting girls or women.

●Modifications or enhancements to an existing program to address the psycho-social factors to make it more appealing to inactive girls or women.

●A workshop to educate coaches about the psycho-social factors that impact women’s and girls’ engagement and performance.

●Delivery of one or more of CAAWS’ workshops (for more information visit

●Participation or leadership projects targeting diverse ethno-cultural communities (including Aboriginal).

●Participation, leadership or capacity building projects targeting Ontario’s French-speaking communities.

Mandatory Criteria

●The organization applying for the funds must be able to accept and manage the project funds.

●Project activities must be delivered in Ontario.

●The project must be completed by March 31, 2015.

●Project logic and activities must be consistent with CAAWS publication “Actively Engaging Women and Girls: Addressing the Psycho-Social Factors", and with Canadian Sport for Life.

● The project must contribute to building capacity within the community sport and recreation sector to increase the participation and leadership of women and girls.

●Evidence of sustainability for the project beyond the funding period must be shown.

Eligibility - Who Can Apply?

●Community organizations in Ontario (e.g.municipal parks and recreation departments, community associations, sport associations/clubs, sport councils, schools or schools boards, public health departments, health coalitions, settlement agencies, friendship centres, boys and girls clubs, etc.)

●Ontario provincial and regional non-profit and registered charitable organizations (e.g. provincial sport organizations, regional health alliances, etc.).

●National non-profit and registered charitable organizations, if proposed project activities will be delivered in Ontario (e.g. national sport organizations, national physical activity organizations).

GRANTEE EXPECTATIONS

Successful applicants must:

●Sign an agreement outlining their responsibilities related to management of the funds, project reporting, and communication with CAAWS.

●Comply with reporting requirements to share project progress, successes, challenges, key outcomes, and plans for the future. An interim report must be submitted mid-way through the project’s development and implementation. A final report must be submitted within one month of completion of the project. ●Acknowledge funding support from CAAWS and the Ontario Sport and Recreation Communities Fund on all project communication and promotional materials.

PROJECT SUPPORT

CAAWS will provide on-going support and mentoring to funded projects, including templates for reporting on project outcomes and activities, and profile in related CAAWS communication (e.g. on the CAAWS website, through social media, etc.).
