APPLYING FOR THE POSITION

To be eligible for this position you must:

  • be an enrolled UC Berkeley student
  • have a cumulative GPA of 2.3 or higher
  • Work-Study Students are encouraged to apply.

The Application / Print clearly or type using the attached form.
Essay / Please write one essay, no longer than one page, answering the following question:
  • What qualities and experiences do you have that would make you a successful Academic Services Assistant?

The Resume / The resume should briefly summarize your work experience, achievements, and skills, including a complete list of your software knowledge.
The Transcript / If you are currently enrolled as a Cal student, you must submit a transcript or a Bear Facts copy of your grades that includes your name. If you are a first-semester Cal student, but previously attended a college, university, or community college, or if your previous educational institution was a high school, then you do not need to turn in a transcript.
Your Schedule / You must complete and submit the attached schedule by crossing off all hours when you are NOT available. We will use this schedule to determine interview times.

HIRING & TRAINING
THE INTERVIEW

Successful applicants will be invited to a 40-minute individual interview with a panel of two Academic Services staff members. This will give you a chance to follow-up on items from your application packet.

JOB DESCRIPTION
POSITION DESCRIPTION

Academic Services Assistants (ASAs) work with a team of 10-12 fellow ASAs under the supervision of the Center Supervisor. During regularly scheduled shifts, Academic Services Assistants provide customer service support to residence hall students using the AcademicServicesCenter. Academic Services Assistants help find answers to students’ questions, monitor access to the facility, complete administrative tasks, prepare advertising that promotes the Center, and lead both group and 1-on-1 tutorials on basic software applications.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required: Strong working knowledge of word processing software and Eudora; familiarity with the Internet; minimum cumulative GPA of 2.3; aptitude for learning new software; aptitude for teaching or tutoring.

Preferred: Ability to communicate effectively, ability to maintain cooperative peer relationships, ability to work sensitively with students, teamwork oriented, dependable, attentive to detail, a strong focus on customer service, friendliness and approachability, and an ability to learn MS Word, Netscape, Photoshop, and Excel.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
  • The period of employment for this position commences WHEN HIREDand continues through the end of the 2007-2008 academic year.
  • Academic Services Assistants are paid a wage of $9.50 per hour.
  • The position’s payroll classification title is Assistant I, with the working title of Academic Services Assistant.
  • Academic Services Assistants must be currently enrolled University of California students.
  • Active participation in staff orientation and training is required at the beginning of each semester. Failure to do so will result in termination of the position.
  • During the academic year, Academic Services Assistants are expected to work regularly scheduled shifts and additionally scheduled meetings and training sessions.
  • Academic Services Assistants are expected to attend regular staff meetings and on-going training sessions as scheduled by the Center Supervisor. Meetings are held Wednesdays between 6:00-7:00 pm.
  • Continued employment is contingent upon satisfactory job performance evaluation by the Center Supervisor with assistance from the Academic Program Coordinator.

/ A. / Provide assistance to AcademicServicesCenter users during scheduled shift hours (shifts are three hours long and may fall on holidays or weekends, in the morning, afternoon, and evening):
  1. Provide helpful and courteous assistance to Academic Services center users and fellow staff
  2. AssistAcademicServicesCenter users in the operation of equipment, the use of software, and the use of the Internet
  3. Conduct group workshops and 1-on-1 tutorials on general computer use and specific software packages as assigned
  4. Create informational handouts on computer topics for resident use.
  5. Refer users to computer related resources as necessary
  6. Maintain a working knowledge of the AcademicServicesCenter resources and functions

/ B. / Manage the operation of the AcademicServicesCenter during its scheduled open hours:
  1. Enforce all AcademicServicesCenter policies and procedures
  2. Open and close the AcademicServicesCenter according to operational procedures
  3. Maintain security of the AcademicServicesCenter and its equipment
  4. Control access to the AcademicServicesCenter and track its use as directed by the Center Supervisor
  5. Maintain waiting lists and follow waiting list policies according to operational procedures
  6. Maintain a pleasant, clean, and quiet work environment for AcademicServicesCenter users according to procedures and supervisor expectations
  7. Maintain upkeep of computers by reporting all technical problems and concerns to the Unit Supervisor.
  8. Create email accounts and register new users
  9. Submit shift reports to the Center Supervisor

  1. Creating publicity—flyers, banners, table tents, newsletters, etc.
  2. Cleaning computers
  3. Maintaining bulletin boards
  4. Coordinating recycling pick-up
  5. Generating proposals and statistical reports
  6. Creating and maintaining WWW pages
  7. Overseeing inventory and supplies
  8. Administering the 1-on-1 tutorial program or workshop series

  1. Attend weekly staff meetings with the Center Supervisor
  2. Attend fall semester training and on-going training sessions as scheduled.
  3. Participate in the training of other Academic Services Assistants as directed by the Center Supervisor

1.Work in a safe and responsible manner while not putting self or others at risk. This includes complying with applicable policies and regulations; using personal safety gear; observing warning signs; learning about potential hazards; and reporting unsafe conditions.
