Nature and Purpose of Agency
Chinese American Council Inc. (CPC) with over 50 programs is a non profit community based organization providing educational and social services for over 40 years in Brooklyn, Manhattan and Queens. CPC Queens School Age Day Care @ PS 20 serves multi-ethnic children ages 5-12 years old. It is a year round after school center serving low income families. Our students come from 14 public schools in Region 3 and School District 25. Our staff reflects our diverse student population representing Black and Latino Americans, South East Asian Americans (Chinese, Korean, Hindi, Urdu, etc).
Tasks Available for Students
Assist classroom teachers in tutoring elementary school children in all academic areas and homework assistance, leading and teaching small groups of children in multicultural arts and crafts, team sports, and services, and learn office operations and administrative tasks and program management, participate in special projects (Hall of Science-Math/Music, CPC Olympics, Children’s carnival/bazaar), implement research projects if part of St. John’s coursework and network with other CBOs.
English as a second language is a necessity at PS 20, phonics, one-on-one ESL opportunities available. All other majors are needed as well.
At RISK students also need tutors.
Child Psychology and Social Services majors; PS 20 finds that many of the academic struggles of the students derive from developmental difficulties at home; cultural changes, language, child abuse; awareness of cultural problems/immigrants are faced with and how it affects the students learning abilities.
Time Requirements
St. John’s University students may choose their own flexible volunteer hours. Our year round program hours are: Monday to Friday from 2:30pm – 6:00pm on public school days and 8:30am – 6:00pm on school holidays (winter/spring recess and summer).
Student Awareness/Special Instructions
Students will be developing interpersonal and leadership skills as they learn and serve in a fast paced academic and social service environment integrating real life situations with constructive solutions and enhance their life/work experiences.
