Academic Policies

Here are some of UAH’s academic policies that students ask about the most. See the Academic Information section which starts on page 342 in the catalog for more policies and details. Check the schedule of classes and the website (www.uah.edu) for deadlines.

-Withdrawal and Drop- Early in the semester (the first two weeks) you may drop a class and get a full refund and there will be no record of the class on your transcript. After that point and up until the 10th week of class, you may withdraw with no money refunded and a “W” on your transcript. After the 10th week you must have extraordinary circumstances and fill out paperwork for a late withdrawal to be approved by the associate dean. Once final exams start you many not withdraw.

-Change to Audit- You have the option of either enrolling in a class for audit, or up to a certain date, changing a class from credit to audit during the semester. Attendance is not mandatory, and you get no grade and no credit, just an “AU” on your transcript showing that you sat in on the class. Check for the deadlines.

-Retroactive Withdrawal if you have had documentable extraordinary circumstances (illness, death in the family, etc) and you couldn’t withdraw from classes, you can petition to have all the classes in the semester ( you can’t just choose one or two) retroactively withdrawn within 2 years of that semester. Consult Student Affairs (UC 114) for the paperwork.

-Course repeat policy Although you can always take any class more than one time if you are not satisfied with your grad3e, if you made a C or lower you have the option of having the new grade replace the old one in the GPA calculations. You can do this grade replacement a maximum of 5 times total. Both grades show on the transcript, but the first one does not count toward your grade point average, and has “exclude from GPA” printed under it.

-Academic Bankruptcy If several bad semesters at the beginning of your college career are still weighing your GPA down, you may submit a none-time petition to have all your UAH classes, from your first semester to a point you specify, removed from GPA and degree calculations. You must wait two years after the last semester you want to have removed before you petition for the bankruptcy.
