3.Re-assessment Opportunities
At the discretion of the relevant Examination Board, students failing to fulfil the requirements for progression to the Masters Dissertation or for award of a Diploma or Certificate will normally be permitted one further opportunity for reassessment in a maximum of three courses . For reassessment purposes, synoptically-linked courses will normally be regarded as one course. Resits are not permitted in courses where a mark of 50% (Grade C) or above has been achieved at the first assessment opportunity and/or where the normal progression criteria have been achieved at the first assessment opportunity. Where courses are assessed entirely by examination or by a combination of examination and coursework, the resit will be by examination. For courses where assessment is based solely on coursework, a new assignment will be given.
Any student failing to meet the requirements set out above for progression to the MSc following reassessment cannot proceed to the dissertation stage of the Master of Science, but may be awarded a Postgraduate Diploma as an exit qualification provided they meet all requirements as set out in the table above (4. Award Criteria). Where the requirements for the award of the Postgraduate Diploma are not satisfied, a Postgraduate Certificate may be awarded provided the student meets the requirements set out in the programme structure for the relevant Postgraduate Certificate. The marks for all resits will be capped at 55%.
Where the MSc dissertation is assessed at grade D, students will normally be offered the opportunity to revise and resubmit their dissertation with a view to improving the grade to grade C . The mark for resubmitted dissertations is capped at 55%.

5.Course Choice/Dissertation
In semester 1, students will choose an optional MSc course, namely Liaison & Public Service Interpreting (SCQF level 11), or an elective course from those available in the School (e.g. an ab initio language.). The electives available will be at varying SCQF levels. In semester 2, students may choose to continue with their semester 1 elective, opt for a different elective course, or take a second optional MSc course, namely Subtitling or Interpreting & Intercultural Communication (both SCQF level 11). Under optional courses above, the courses C41CO Theoretical Foundations of Translating, Interpreting and International Politics and C41CP Translation & Interpreting Studies are aimed at native speakers of English and do not include instruction in English academic practice. The courses C41IC Intercultural Communication and Theoretical Foundations of Translating, Interpreting and International Politics and C41ID Translation & Interpreting Studies and Intercultural Communication are aimed at non-native speakers of English and include instruction in English academic practice.
6.Additional Information
Students on this programme will study English and Arabic and will work in both directions between these languages in the practical translating and interpreting activities which are part of the following courses: Applied Professional Skills for Conference Interpreters, Conference Interpreting Arabic-English, Translation Practice Arabic-English I, Translation Practice Arabic-English II, Liaison & Public Service Interpreting, and Interpreting & Intercultural Communication. Students choosing a language elective (SCQF level 7 or 8) as part of their 8 taught courses will not be examined in that language for the SCQF level 11 translating and interpreting activities. The other SCQF level 11 courses listed in point 10 above are non-language-specific and therefore do not involve language-specific activities.
