About the Role

Our Women’s Programme is aiming to expand our services for lesbian and bisexual older womenand to engage with more women than ever before.

The Outreach service offered at LGBT Foundation is central to our mission statement of Empowering People. We have a small team of sessional workers and volunteers and currently offer Outreach to LGBT people across Greater Manchester.This role is for targeted outreach to lesbian and bisexual older (50+) women.

We are looking for older lesbian or bisexual women who want to use their skills and experience to increase engagement with other women, who will likely share some of the same experiences relating to age and sexual orientation.

Outreach is carried out at numerous types of external events, times and locations across Greater Manchester and, less frequently, the wider North West region. This outreach role involves initiating conversations with people their multiple minority identities. These include:

-University societies and fairs

-Community events

-Social and support groups for older women

Sessional worker roles are flexible and varied, and you’re welcome to do more than one sessional worker role at once.

Typical duties

  • Engaging people in positive conversations about wellbeingand their minority identities at external events and groups
  • Signposting and encouraging people to access LGBT Foundation’s services or signposting to external organisations where appropriate
  • Working at busy community events ensuring we speak to a wide range of people
  • Finding new opportunities, events and groups where we can do outreach
  • Identifying and suggest ways we can constantly improve these services for our service users

Skills & Knowledge Required

  • Extremely personable, engaging and friendly personality required for this role
  • Comfortable in potentially loud and busy social situations
  • Ability to approach new people and start conversations
  • Physically active and capable of travelling between venues for between two and three hours
  • Reliable and committed to arriving on time, and informing the LGBT Foundation well in advance should there be a problem with attending
  • Some knowledge of the LGBT Foundation’s mission and the services it provides.
  • An understanding of the specific issues and health inequalities faced by lesbian and bisexual women with multiple minority identities, including from personal lived experience.
  • Reliable approach and ability to keep basic records of resource distribution/event attendance.
  • Able to talk to, and approach people to discuss sensitive subjects.
  • Able to sustain enthusiasm, approachability and energy levels for extended periods of time.
  • To have a commitment to equal opportunities and the empowerment of people.
  • To be able to work independently, self-organise, and work as part of a team.
