AAIDD Annual Conference

Dear AAIDD colleagues:

I wanted to contact you to personally invite you to plan to attend the 134th Annual Meeting of the American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities, Imagining the Future, Celebrating the Past, to be held in Providence, Rhode Island on June 9 to 11, 2010.

I honestly cannot recall a more important meeting in recent memory for AAIDD and its members. How will we be Celebrating the Past? First, we’ll be bidding a fond goodbye (farewell seems so final!) and express our gratitude to our long-tenured Executive Director, Doreen Croser, who has announced her retirement effective June 1st. We’ll have a plenary celebrating the accomplishments of the association during Doreen’s 20+ year term, followed by a reception at which you can wish Doreen well and thank her for her incredible contributions to AAIDD and the field. We’ll also be celebrating the legacy of Senator Edward Kennedy and Eunice Kennedy Shriver. The impact of these two legends on our field has been inestimable. We’ve invited the Honorable Patrick J. Kennedy, who represents Rhode Island’s First Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives and, of course, is the late Senator Kennedy’s son, to speak about his father’s vision and his family’s impact on the lives of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and our field’s and association’s work.

And how will we be Imagining the Future? First, poster and breakout sessions presented by members like yourself will focus on innovative research, practices, and policy initiatives that will guide us as we face the challenges and opportunities for this new decade. Also, this will be your chance to meet our new CEO (titles change over time!) and hear this person’s vision for the future of the association and the field. Finally, we will unveil the 11th Edition of the association’s internationally recognized Terminology and Classification system, which for the first time defines the term intellectual disability, clearly an important move for the future of the field. You’ll be able to attend workshops presented by the manual’s authors, including the lead author, past-president Robert Schalock.

If you’re an early career professional, we’ve worked hard to ensure that you’ll feel welcome and will have the opportunity to meet peers, interact with the association’s leaders, and become part of the life of the association if you’re not already involved.

All that and the ambiance of one of America’s oldest cities, Providence, founded in 1636!

Join us in Providence and be a part of imagining and shaping a bright future for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. That future begins with you.

See you in Providence!

Michael L. Wehmeyer, Ph.D., AAIDD

President-elect and Conference Chair
