2009 LWV OF SOUTH CAROLINA LEADERS DAY:

GETTING TO great TOGETHER!

Try to Be There! August 15 in Columbia *

Take part in exciting leadership training and education sessions in areas like…

  • Building on what you’ve got: Identifying local League resources and strengths and using them effectively—Interactive session presented by Bob Zia, organizational and leadership development specialist
  • Nuts and bolts of conducting effective, fair and exciting candidates forums and debates
  • Web-based communication, such as websites and social networking
  • Networking with state League leaders on board roles and LWVSC studies and action priorities
  • A chance for new and not-so-new leaders to connect with committed Leaguers who are doing remarkable things in South Carolina
  • A panel discussion on a critical social and criminal justice issue--women in the corrections system

and their children—facilitated by Robin Kimbrough-Melton, LWVSC Criminal Justice Director.

Female offenders are the fastest growing segment of the state’s prison population. Although female offenders still represent a small proportion of the overall prison population, their growing numbers are a source of concern because they often are parenting minor children at the time of their incarceration. They also are more likely than men to return to parenting on their release. Despite this, their unique histories and pathways into prison are rarely adequately addressed by correctional systems. Panelists will include members of the South Carolina Correctional Association’s Task Force on Adult and Juvenile Female Offenders, who will highlight efforts to document and raise awareness of the needs of female offenders and their children.
