On behalf of the Digital Inclusion Group (DIG) Nigel Lewis welcomed everyone to the Workshop Group extending his thanks to DCLG for hosting this particular meeting.

The full list of accepted invitations is reproduced at appendix 1.

2)  Background –

Russell provided a brief update on the Age Action Alliance.

·  The Alliance is an independent partnership of organizations committed to taking practical action to support the most vulnerable older people in today’s society.

·  Membership now stands at 750 organizations.

·  The work of the Alliance is taken forward through 15 themed working groups of which DIG is one.

·  There are opportunities for members to engage a wider audience through the Alliance’s social media platforms. (Website, Monday Morning update e-mail, Twitter and Pinterest)

3)  Grey Cells model -

As part of the AAA-DIG meeting (William Barker and Tim McSweeney DCLG) ran a short (60 minute) workshop exercise on the Grey Cells blueprint. DIG members outlined their perspective on each of the (digital foundation and digital delivery) sections on the blueprint see links below.

For the blueprint see:-

It was agreed that the exercise will help inform a further revision of the blueprint and will feed in to DIG and DCLG’s work with the Public Service Transformation Network and Chief Scientist’s Policy Review in support of current and post-election policy development.

DCLG (in association with DWP,GDS and GO-Science) will host a follow-up meeting of key project leads that attended the event to look at possible link-ups between related projects identified at the workshop.

AP: Those interested in taking part in the follow-up session should email by 30th April.

4)  Living Well in the Digital Age: David Wilcox and Drew Mackie.

David and Drew presented on Living Well in the Digital Age and showcased ideas for Living Labs on the lines of the briefing note circulated beforehand.

The main points were:

·  After a substantial exploration into digital technology for Ageing Better, they refocused on Living Well in the Digital Age, reflecting a personalised rather than programme-driven approach.

·  The DCLG Grey Cells blueprint provides a policy-level framework for digital services and citizen engagement. David and Drew are developing a kit to help design support at two lower levels: local community, and personal.

·  Their aim is to pilot local Living Labs, where they can help local partners develop initiatives that support people using whatever technology meets their needs and interests. The focus is on mapping local assets for projects, and helping build networks to use these and increase social capital.

·  As well as supporting local Labs, they plan to develop a kit that will be more widely available. This will include advice on mapping networks and assets, and how to run prototyping simulations. The starting point in each instance is a set of personas representing people who may benefit in any programme. This ensures that design and development is person-focused.

In addition, at the workshop Drew Mackie described work with Croydon Voluntary Action, where they are piloting their first Living Lab linked to their work on Asset Based Community Development. They have been working with community builders and connectors to help them add social network mapping to their current asset-mapping work, and also research what tech the builders and connectors can use in their work.

4.1) Next steps

David and Drew will review with the Digital Inclusion Group how best to re-form a working group to take forward the ideas for a kit and local Living Labs. One spur is that the Big Lottery Fund has expressed interest in their approach for the new Accelerating Ideas programme, and we will outline a proposal that will hopefully lead to further discussion.

AP) David and Drew are keen to hear from anyone who might be interesting in joining them in further development.

5) Closing remarks – Nigel Lewis

Nigel reflected on what had been a very positive and energised workshop confirming his belief that there is a real opportunity for DIG and others to work together to turn the Living Well in the Digital Age concept into a “toolkit”. He reaffirmed that this would be a toolkit that we can then use within DIG and promote to other community groups/partnerships to help them as well. He welcomed the opportunity for a smaller sub set of DIG to work further with DCLG and encouraged those who were interested to get in touch with Tim, David and Drew as appropriate.

Meeting closed 12.30 pm
