Culminating Assignment

Introduction

The core thinking process that you have refined during this course involved developing solutions to communications design problems using a structured process that includes the following steps:

1. Clearly identify a problem: both in terms of the item that you are to create, and in terms of the context in which you develop a solution. It is important to think, when developing solutions, about things like:

a. The talent you have available to complete the job,

b. The time available, and

c. The technology.

2. Complete any research: both in terms of the scope of the assignment, and in terms of the technology that you are using to solve the problem.

3. Develop solutions: consider possible solutions to the problem you must address. There are always lots of ways of solving problem. Consider an assortment of good ideas that might come up, and then

4. Select a solution: the best solutions are those that consider the items mentioned above, i.e. the best solutions aren’t necessarily the ones that are the coolest for your audience, or for you as a producer. The best solutions are those that take your audience into consideration, but that also take talent, time, and technology that you have available to complete the project into consideration as well.

5. Implement the solution: create your final product and then evaluate your solution. This last step is particularly important if you revisit this work in the future (if you must create a “new and improved” version).

6.Evaluate your solution.

During this course, we have looked at specific technologies but we have learned they are not nearly as important as the process itself: the software that we have available to us, and the other digital tools that go with this software have changed and will continue to change; your talent levels will change (hopefully improving over time); and the time that you have available to complete any project will change. But you’ll still have to solve problems…and you will always be using the same basic problem solving process outlined above.

Assignment

As a final project, I would like you to show off both your best work with the technologies we have learned in class, as well as your understanding of the portability of the design process. More specifically, I would like you to develop, using any of the technologies that we have used in class, some form of presentation that:

  1. Showcases your abilities as a designer and problem solver.
  2. Evokes a strong emotional response from your viewer.

You will need to create a product that demonstrates:

1. A clear understanding of the design process

2. Your grasp of graphic design principles by being a clear, effective piece of work that clearly appeals to the target audience,

3. Your talent and comfort level with the technology from among those we have learned in class, and with which you are most comfortable.

Any Visual or Textual elements that you provide must be created by yourself.

Specifics

Establish what you will be creating and for whom, the purpose of this project, who it is for, and what it will, in general, include.

Develop your design brief that gives a short overview of what you are intending to accomplish (provide sketches of your layouts/storyboards/thumbnails of photos/etc)

You must meet with me to discuss your design definition, and how the design you develop. As always do not continue with the process of developing your design until it is approved.

Due Dates:
Design Proposal: Wednesday January 11th, 2017
