OLYMPICS: The BMJ have opened a special issue Olympic portal [ ]. Lead article is on the evidence for claims made by sports drinks and hydration advice. The House of Lords also issued a report on sports science and medicine and the Olympic legacy (House of Lords, 2012).

SOCIAL CARE:The Caring for our future White Paper was published this month by the Department of Health (Department of Health, 2012a) together with the draft Care and Support Bill (House of Commons, 2012). Careers UK published commentaries on both the White Paper (Carers UK, 2012a) and on the draft Bill (Carers UK, 2012b).

NHS REFORMS: Two interesting graphicshave been produced on the topic of NHS Reform. A plan of the future shape of the NHS [ e-mail for a copy ] (DAC Beachcroft, 2012) and a timeline of the journey of the current reform process from The King’s Fund (The King’s Fund, 2012). The NHS Commissioning Board released it first Annual Report (NHS Commissioning Board, 2012). The Secretary of State for Health Andrew Lansley, published the NHS Annual Report with an overview of the NHS and Reform (Secretary of State for Health, 2012). The NHS Confederation released a briefing on the new Academic Health Science Networks(Health Service Research Network - NHS Confederation, 2012). The Department of Health have issued a summary of the future role of Monitor as a sector regulator for healthcare in England (Monitor & Department of Health, 2012). The document includes a helpful overview of the future shape and structure of the health sector. As the reforms to Public Health roll out, Duncan Selbie, CEO of Public Health England has released his vision of the future for Public Health (Selbie, 2012). The Department of Health released a report on the effects of the NHS Constitution, reporting low levels of awareness among patients but high levels of awareness and support for its aims among NHS staff (Department of Health, 2012b).

MENTAL HEALTH: The Information Centre released NHS Outcomes Framework indicators. They show, among other things that people with a mental health condition have 3 times the mortality of the normal population. (NHS The Information Centre, 2012). The National Confidential Inquiry into Suicide and Homicide by People with Mental Illness released it annual report(National Confidential Inquiry into Suicide and Homicide by People with Mental Illness, 2012). Cochrane published an updated review of crisis intervention in the community for people with mental illness (Murphy, Irving, Adams, & Driver, 2012).

MANAGEMENT AND ORGANISATION: The new NHS Change Model website is designed to help NHS managers and organisations plan change within the NHS (NHS Change Model, 2012). The Centre for Workforce Intelligence published a briefing note explaining its activities in particular Horizon Scanning (Centre for Workforce Intelligence, 2012). The Centre for Innovation in Health Management published a new Relationship Toolkit (some items free to access others require registration) to help managers plan service improvements(Centre for Innovation In Health Management, 2012). The Department of Health have published a new strategy/structure for Informatics in the NHS (Department of Health, 2012c). The National Audit Office conducted a review of the financial stability of the NHS going forward. Their broad conclusion is that their significant variation in financial performance and some trusts are in a very weak position and will/may fail (National Audit Office, 2012).

HOSPITAL ADMISSIONS: Researchers atBristolUniversity led a series of systematic reviews of research around unplanned hospital admissions. The reviews identify a number of strategies that are reported as being successful in reducing unplanned admissions(Purdy et al., 2012).

EDUCATION: Universities UK released a report that makes the case for a continued relationship between the health care sector and Universities as the reform process takes effect through the formation of Health Education England [HEE] and the Local Education and Training Boards [LETBs] (Universities UK, 2012).

PATIENT CARE: The Royal College of Physicians released a resource on falls prevention(Royal College of Physicians, 2012). The Roy Castle Foundation produced an interactive map of Lung Cancer in the UK (The Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation, 2012). The Department of Health published key finding from the first national survey of bereavement(Department of Health, 2012d). Marie Curie Cancer Care published a report of the transition to palliative care for young people(Marie Curie Cancer Care, 2012).

CONSULATATIONS:The Department of Health have issued a consultation on new safeguarding powers (Department of Health, 2012e) for local authorities to make enquires if they suspect abuse or neglect.

ALCOHOL: The House of Commons released a report on the Governments Alcohol strategy. The Report raises questions relating to Alcohol consumption, treatment strategies and government policy (House of Commons Health Committee, 2012).
