A Rhetorical Analysis: Round 2-The Speech Version

Rhetoric: The art and study of using language effectively and persuasively

Analysis: A presentation of the results from studying the nature of something

A rhetorical analysis is an examination of how well the components of an argument work together to persuade or move the audience (104). Chapter 5, In Everything’s an Argument, covers the elements of a rhetorical analysis, but refer to pages 123-134 to view an example of an analysis and to read a guide on how to compose an analysis. In your analysis, you must identify and evaluate the author’s:

¶  Purpose (Why)

¶  Claim (What)

¶  Target audience (to Whom)

¶  Appeal to logos, ethos, and pathos (How)

¶  Use of rhetorical devices (With which tools)

You must cite specific examples (direct quotations and paraphrasing) from the speech or from any parts of chapters 1 through 5, Chapter 12, or our classes’ rhetorical device packet to support your analysis. Use the NFA Research Guide, Chapter 20 of your textbook, and the outline handout to properly format your speech and in-text citations.

You may work with a partner or work alone for this speech. First, you will select a speech from www.ted.com that is no longer than 10 minutes long. Second, you will view the speech several times, and then you will compose a rhetorical analysis of the speech using outline format. Finally, you will present the speech to the class.

If you work with a partner, you will submit only one speech outline. However, each of you is expected to speak the same amount of time (~2-3 minutes), and you will both earn the same grade. Your speech, not including the viewing of the speech you analyzed, will be between 4-6 minutes. You may use a PowerPoint presentation, but it is optional.
