A RESOLUTION adjourning the Senate in loving memory and honor of Hyleme Salem George.

With deepest respect and admiration, we pay homage and tribute to Hyleme Salem George, and we pause in silent reverence for his soul.

WHEREAS, Hyleme Salem George was born on January 28, 1912, a native of Hamat, Lebanon, and longtime resident of Lebanon, Marion County, Kentucky, and he traversed these earthly bounds on December 23, 2001; he was a lifelong member of St. Michael's Eastern Orthodox Church in Louisville, and his funeral service was performed in Lebanon on December 27, 2001, by Father Alexander Atty; and

WHEREAS, Hyleme Salem George immigrated to the United States as an infant with his loving parents, the late Salem and Mae Coury George, he was the devoted husband of seventy years to Nonie Abraham George; he was the loving father of Salem M. George, Sr., Irene M. George, Jo Ann George Gormley, Anthony George, Donald J. George, Hyleme S. George, Jr., and Deborah George Matthews; and he was the proud grandfather of twenty-one grandchildren and twenty-eight great-grandchildren; and

WHEREAS, Hyleme Salem George was an advocate of education, and instilled in each of his children an appetite for knowledge, which is evidenced by their high levels of academic achievement, a rightful tribute to this fine American citizen; and

WHEREAS, Hyleme Salem George was an esteemed member of the Marion County community where he was mayor of Lebanon from 1966 to 1972, and during his tenure as mayor, he was successful in raising wages of city employees, and he was a voice for the working class, the poor, and African-Americans; and

WHEREAS, the passing of Hyleme Salem George has left a void that cannot be filled, and he is mourned across the length and breadth of the Commonwealth;

NOW, THEREFORE,

Be it resolved by the Senate of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Kentucky:

Section 1. The Senate does hereby express its utter sense of bereavement upon the passing of Hyleme Salem George, and extends to his family and friends its most profound and deepest sympathy.

Section 2. When the Senate adjourns this date, it does so in loving memory and honor of Hyleme Salem George.

Section 3. The Clerk of the Senate is hereby directed to transmit a copy of this Resolution to Salem M. George, Sr., M.D., 407 Country Club Road, Lebanon, Kentucky 40033.
