This lecture reviews our understanding of the neuroscientific basis of the mind, in the context of core psychoanalytic knowledge. It will cover the anatomic and neurochemical basis of various emotion systems and the regulation of various emotion states, and the way that emotion seems capable of hijacking cognitive systems in the generation of delusional beliefs. Key themes will be the substantial support which neuroscience has now offered for core psychoanalytic ideas, but also areas where there appears to be inconsistency between the neuroscientific and psychoanalytic accounts of the organisation of the mind.

Professor Oliver Turnbull is a Professor at the Centre for Cognitive Neuroscience, and Pro Vice-Chancellor at Bangor University in Wales. He has published widely within neuropsychology, with a special interest in the neurobiology of false belief and confabulation. He is the immediate past editor of the journal Neuropsychoanalysis and the secretary of the International Neuropsychoanalysis Society. He is the co-author, with Mark Solms, of The Brain and the Inner World, published by Other Press in 2002, and was recipient of the Clifford Yorke Prize in 2004.

This lecture is being sponsored by the Specialist Psychological Therapies of Leicestershire Partnership Trust and The Clinical Psychology Department of the University of Leicester
