Purpose / People credited with this unit standard, in the context of an early childhood education (ECE) service, are able to: describe own developing pedagogical practice as it relates to learning for Pasifika children; identify, explain, and evaluate teaching strategies to enhance learning for a Pasifika child; implement teaching strategies that enhance the learning of Pasifika children; and evaluate the teaching and learning strategies for Pasifika children.

Explanatory notes
1This unit standard is intended for those who are trainee managers or supervisors of Pasifika children in an ECE service.
2An early childhood education (ECE) service may include a centre-based service, hospital-based service, or home-based service. The home-based service may be nominated by the child’s parent, be the child’s own home, or the home of the educator.
The implementation of ECE teaching strategies to enhance learning must be carried out in one or more ECE services attended by Pasifika children.
3Social competence refers to but is not limited to – development of self-control; taking responsibility for own actions; self-respect, and respect for other children, adults, the environment; development and maintenance of relationships.
4People seeking credit for this unit standard will be required to show that their demonstration of the evidence requirements arises from teaching and/or practicum experience in an ECE service, through observing and implementing Te Whāriki and current legislative requirements relating to curriculum.
5Definitions
Three 'broad age groups' are defined in Te Whāriki for children. These are overlapping age categories and aredefined as:
infant – birth to 18 months;
toddler – one year to three years;
young child – two and a half years to school entry age.
Pasifika children are pre-school members of Pasifika communities in New Zealand, and may include but are not limited to – Cook Islands Māori, Fijian, Niuean, Samoan, Tokelauan, Tongan, Tuvaluan.
Educators include all persons and groups involved in the learning and development of children which may include – teachers, supervisors, co-ordinators, families, nannies.

Outcome 1
Describe own developing pedagogical practice as it relates to learning for Pasifika children in an ECE service.
Evidence requirements
1.1Own developing pedagogical practice is described in terms of the skills required for facilitating learning and development of Pasifika children in an ECE service.
Rangeincludes but is not limited to – interpersonal skills, language, engagement with Pasifika children;
evidence of two examples for each of – infant, toddler, young child is required.
1.2Significant personal teaching and learning experiences are described in terms of their impact on the development of own pedagogical practice.

Outcome 2
Identify, explain, and evaluate teaching strategies to enhance learning for a Pasifika child in an ECE service.
Rangeteaching strategies may include but are not limited to – relationship building; noticing, recognising and responding; effective organising; social competence strategies; use of voice; appropriate body language; modelling; open-ended questioning; active listening;
evidence of four strategies is required;
evidence of one child or a group of children from one age category is required.

2.1Teaching strategies are identified and their links to the principles, strands, and goals of Te Whāriki are explained.
2.2Teaching strategies are evaluated in terms of ways in which they are expected to enhance the learning of a Pasifika child in an ECE service.
Outcome 3
Implement teaching strategies that enhance the learning of Pasifika children in an ECE service.
Rangeevidence of two strategies for each of an infant, toddler, young child is required.
Evidence requirements
3.1Teaching and learning strategies are implemented in a way that is culturally appropriate for Pasifika children.
3.2Assessments that support children’s learning and development are implemented in line with selected teaching strategies.
Outcome 4
Evaluate the teaching and learning strategies for Pasifika children in an ECE service.
Rangeevidence of evaluation of teaching strategies for an infant, toddler, young child is required.
Evidence requirements
4.1Teaching and learning strategies for Pasifika children are evaluated in terms of their effectiveness in achieving the desired outcome.
4.2Feedback on teaching and learning strategies is sought from other Pasifika educators to inform own practices in terms of enhancing Pasifika children’s learning.
4.3Own teaching experience is evaluated in terms of enhancing Pasifika children’s learning.
Rangeincludes – justification of modifications made during the teaching experience; areas for own professional learning; engagement and maintenance of Pasifika children’s interest and involvement.
