Mester 3, Week 1

INSTRUCTIONS
Purpose: / To introduce LAUSD Graduation Requirements and Minimum College Admission “A-G” Requirements and High School Individualized Graduation Plan.
To understand GPA calculation.
Time: / 30 minutes
Materials: / Handouts of LAUSD Graduation Requirements and Minimum College Admission “A-G” Requirements, High School Individualized Graduation Plan, and Teacher Course list for Arleta Electives, and strategies to improve my grade.
Assignment: / Class discussion and LAUSD Four Year High School Individualized and strategies to improve my grade.
ESLRs: / Self-Directed Learning
  1. Have an introductory discussion on the following topics:
  2. Why is it important to know what classes you need to take to graduate from high school?
  3. Why is it important to know what classes you need to take to go to college?
  1. Pass out copies of LAUSD Graduation Requirements and Minimum College Admission “A-G” Requirements and review with students.
  2. Pass out Copies of High School Individualized Graduation Plan and have students write their name on the handout and review. Have students place all handouts in designated area of the portfolio.
  3. Explain to students it is always important to know their GPA (Grade Point Average). See lesson below “Calculating GPA”

GPA/YOUR GRADE POINT AVERAGE

Mester 3 – Week 1

Purpose: / To calculate, keep a record of, and reflect on your GPA
Time: / 20-30 minutes
Materials: / Pen or pencil, A-G summary, transcripts, and/or report card
Assignment: / Using the table provided, calculate your GPA
Reflections: / Reflect on your satisfaction of your past mester’s GPA, as well as your cumulative GPA

Prompt: Your Grade Point Average (GPA) is a direct reflection of how you have done in your A-G classes. Your graduation portfolio will contain a summary of your GPA maintained throughout your high school career. Using information from your transcripts, report card, or A-G summary, calculate your GPA from last mester, as well as your cumulative GPA. Write a brief reflection on your satisfaction with your GPA.

To calculate your GPA:

Review your transcript. If not available, see your counselor ASAP.

Using the table below, enter the number of each grade you have earned in A-G classes. For example, if you have earned 4 A’s, enter the number 4 in the space next to the A. For each grade entry, multiply the number by the worth, and enter the result in the appropriate “points” space. Divide the total points by the total number of classes taken.
