Areas of Study / This is an entry-level course. This course is for students who have not taken foreign language previously. Grade 7 Italian is equivalent to the first half of high school level 1 Italian.
This course is intended as a first experience in the target language and prepares students to meet the NYS Education Department’s Languages Other Than English (LOTE) Checkpoint A proficiency level. Students learn to speak and understand the language using basic vocabulary within the context of everyday situations, use grammatical structures within the context of topics, and work with vocabulary lists, original dialogues, notes and letters related to the topics.
Students learn to:
·  Speak and understand, using basic vocabulary within context of everyday situations
·  Use grammatical structures within the context of topics
·  Create vocabulary lists, original dialogues, notes and letters related to topics
Topics:
·  Personal Identification - Age, nationality, address and telephone number, family, occupation, place and date of birth, height, weight, complexion, facial features, body shape, color of hair/eyes, disabilities, character, personality, likes/dislikes, tastes and interests.
·  Education - Types of schools, subjects, schedule/school year, programs, content, examinations/grading, diploma, students’ organizations, extracurricular activities, relationships among students, relationships between staff and students, discipline, roles/responsibilities/expectations, structure, personnel and society’s needs/expectations.
·  Family Life - Family members, activities, roles and responsibilities, and rapport among family members.
·  House and Home - House, apartment, rental/ownership, identification, size/function, furnishings, garden/terrace/balcony, and appliances.
·  Meal taking/food and drink - Everyday family fare, regional and national specialties, fast food, food and drink preparation, special occasion menus, regular family meals, eating with friends/relatives, eating out and socializing in public establishments.
·  Current events - Miscellaneous news, arts (theater/cinema/music), people in the arts and special events and opportunities for exchange.
