01 / Chairman’s Introduction & Welcome
Derek Boulton, the Chairman, welcomed all attendees to the meeting and gave a breakdown of the agenda and what the morning would cover.
02 / Bob Maitland, Immediate Response Training – Fire Risk Assessment Workshop
BM gave a brief overview of his career and explained to the group what his current job as a Consultant entails. He highlighted what he looks for when he visits companies to complete fire risk assessments and the approach he takes with all other fire safety aspects.
BM then explained the importance of competency of persons that carry out FRA’s and the responsibility of the manager/responsible person to make sure all fire checks and assessments have been completed. BM led the workshop and engaged the group to produce examples of fire hazards, sources of ignition, means of escape, features such as emergency lighting requirements etc., means of warning/alarm systems and procedural/fire plans aspects.
03 / Jack Nicholson, Station Manager – Technical Fire Safety
JN introduced himself to the group and explained that he was the Station Manager for the Technical Fire Safety Department amongst other roles. His role on a daily basis involves visiting businesses to reduce any risks at premises and attending events that happen across Swindon, he also deals with fire investigation, accident investigation and discipline and grievance.
JN discussed the following topics:

·  Enforcement and Prosecutions
JN showed the group a video to highlight the physical/chemical process of fire spread within rooms and the timespan of the following bullet point aspects:
·  Initial Stages

·  Backdraft
JN also briefed the group on key aspects of the following:
·  Legislation and Guidance
·  Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) 2005
·  DCLG Suite Guidance Document
·  British Standards e.g. BS5839 Fire Alarm Systems
·  Do you have paying guests
·  Our website – FRA template
·  Regulations code for enforcing authorities
JN went through some recent prosecutions and explained that the courts will take the highest issues that were found and fine that company accordingly. He then gave an overview of the following:
Enforcement and Prosecution
·  Wiltshire FRS Fire Safety Audits following suspected breaches
·  Fire levels of enforcement
·  Examples of Prosecutions
04 / Any Other Business
Bob Lentell (BL), vice chairman thanked both speakers for their very informative presentations to the group on fire safety.
BL asked the group to complete an evaluation form and if there were any topics that members wished to be covered in future meetings they should either put a name and contact number on the form or give lots of detail of what they actually require as opposed to just naming a particular safety discipline.
BL explained that the next meeting is due to take place on the 19th May at Wrag Barn and its due to start at 2pm. He asked the group if they were happy for meetings to continue taking place at the following times:
Ø  Spring /Summer – 2pm
Ø  Autumn/Winter – 10am
BL reminded the group to visit the WOSHA Facebook page.
BL thanked Sarah-Jane French (SJF) for hosting the meeting at the Wiltshire Fire and Rescue premises.
SJF explained that she would put the presentation slides from both Bob Maitland and Jack Nicholson onto the WOSHA website for those members who were unable to attend.
