2015 St. James Code of Conduct

Varsity Volleyball & 5th-8th Grade Soccer

1. This St. James Code of Conduct is intended to convey the minimal expectations that any member of the St. James varsity volleyball and or the 5th-8th grade soccer teams are expected to abide by when conducting themselves on and off the court/field and when representing St. James Lutheran School.

2. The primary purpose of St. James Lutheran School and Church is to enhance our spiritual growth, meaning as members and athletes we will act as Christian gentlemen/ladies when representing our school and team.

3. Christian education is equally important at St. James. The coaching staff will abide by and follow the school academic curriculum. Parents/Guardians are asked to monitor their player’s performance in the classroom to minimize academic problems that could occur.

4. All practices are mandatory unless otherwise specified by the coaching staff. If a player is absent from school or is ill, please notify a member of the coaching staff to be excused from practice.

5. If any player is absent from practice and was not excused by a coach, they will not play in the upcoming game, but will dress and sit with the team.

6. If any player is consistently absent from practices and/or games, that player will not participate or play until the coaching staff deems otherwise, and may be dismissed from the team for the remainder of the year.

7. All players are to be on time and are expected to be in their proper attire and ready to go by the specified practice time or time specified by the coach for games. Players are not to be a disruption and are to stay off the gym floor if other teams are practicing.

8. All players are expected to work hard and give their best effort during practices and games. Effort is a major factor when determining playing time.

9. The coaching staff will try to be as fair as possible in distributing playing time amongst all players. However, these are competitive sports and playing time is not a guarantee and the coaching staff will not jeopardize an outcome of any game so that everyone plays.

10. No player is to disrespect any teammate, coach, fan, cheerleader, staff, referee, or opponent in any fashion. This includes acts such as taunting other players, yelling at opponents, talking back or mocking coaches, referees, etc. The coaching staff

will discipline a player up to dismissal from the team who acts in a disrespectful manner.

11. Players using social media sites such as but not limited Facebook and Twitter are not permitted to post any type of “perceived” negative comments about the team, school, coaches, parents, teammates, opposing teams. Violation of this policy may result in disciplinary action leading up to suspension or dismissal from the team.

12. No player is to use any profane language or gestures during practice or any event associated with the school. The coaching staff will discipline a player acting in this manner. A player may be suspended or dismissed from the team.

13. Players misbehaving or messing around during practice will be instructed to run, sit out, or dismissed from practice. If the behavior continues, the player may be removed from the team for the remainder of the year.

14. The coaching staff will not discuss any issue with a player, parent, and or guardian immediately following a game or practice. The coaching staff will address all issues by setting up a scheduled time to discuss the issue with the AD, player, parent, and/or guardian.

Varsity Volleyball Specific

1. Players are expected to bring their knee pads to all practices and games along with appropriate gym only shoes.

2. Practice attire shall consist of acceptable volleyball attire. “Crazy” socks are not permitted unless specifically granted on an individual game basis by the coaches.

3. Because we have many games in which we play only one team, all players may not be asked to dress every game or tourneys. This will be based on level of competition and capability of the individual player. Players are always welcome to attend games and support their team.

4. All players are to be on time to all games as specified:

a. (A) team players must be present and sitting on bench behind (B) team players at the start time of the (B) team game.

b. (B) team players must be present and sitting on bench behind (A) team players at the start time of the (A) team game.

5th-8th Grade Soccer Specific

1. Players are expected to bring their shin guards, cleats, and running shoes to all practices. ABSOLUTELY NO CLEATS WILL BE ALLOWED IN THE GYM. Players must remove cleats when entering gym. Players should bring a water bottle to all practices and games. We would like to keep the kids completely out of the gym once practice begins in order to minimize additional cleanup.

2. A large majority of our practices will be conditioning since soccer requires a great deal of running and endurance. The older, experienced players are expected to be good role models for their younger teammates and assist them when help is needed.

3. There are games in which are opponents will have 7th & 8th graders, therefore in these instances especially, the younger players may not receive equal play time. This will be based on the level of safety, competition and capability of the individual player.
